I just bought a new Kodak digital camera and have discovered that I can not access kodak.com. It is the only website that I've found that I can not access. I always get the "The page cannot be displayed".

My desktop computer is running Windows XP with SP2 installed. The XP firewall is turned off as I'm running Norton Antivirus and Personal Firewall. (I can't access the site with the firewall disabled either).

I connect to the internet through a DSL modem behind a wireless router. I have a laptop computer running Win98SE also using the internet connection and I can't access kodak.com from that computer either. However I can connect to the site fine from work and friends tell me they have no problem connecting.

My little wireless network is running 128-bit encryption, SSID is not transmitting, and pings are blocked all in the interest of security.

I've added kodak.com to my trusted sites. I've set it up in Norton Peronal Firewall to permit everything.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

Are you running anything else like Google toolbar or popup blocker programs? Any antispyware programs?
NIS has been known to occasionally cause this kind of problem, I would try uninstall/reinstall of the firewall program.

I should have mentioned before that I have both the SP2 and Norton pop-up blockers running. I've tried it with them shut off and it still doesn't work. Interestingly, I can access Kodak sites in any other county, but as soon as I click a link that points back to the US site it doesn't work.

Jim--not trying to be flip or cute, but have you checked that site on another pc ? Have you called a friend and asked them to access it on their pc? Could it just be a problem with their site mechanics?

Edit: Does this happen when you have the camera connected to download pic, or when not connected or both....anything like that?

As I said in my initial post, I can access the site fine from my computer at work, and I've asked friends to access it, and they have no problem, and they are on the same ISP as me.

I have not used the camera yet, so it has not been connected.

I tested it here with Firefox 0.9, it worked fine.
Have you tried an alternative browser as diagnostic?
NIS has been known to occasionally cause this kind of problem, I would try uninstall/reinstall of the firewall program.
Again, I would try reinstall of the firewall.

I gave it a shot, uninstalled and reinstalled NPF but it didn't help.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Have you taken the laptop to someone else's house or to work to see if it will access the site from there? Also what kind of AV or firewall do you have on the laptop, a Norton product?

How about uninstalling the NPF, download update the free Sygate Firewall (many of us use it):

http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

and then try access the Kodak site.

Have you tried your ISP's telephone help line?

Mine [Blueyonder] has never failed to find a fix for any problem with which I've presented them.

My ISP's tech support page recommended running a trace to see where the problem was.

I ran "tracert www.kodak.com" and watched the steps until it reached cerf.net and timed out there.

I don't know what, if anything, to do with that info however.

To answer the earlier question, the laptop computer also has Norton Personal Firewall, and both have Norton Anti-virus.

It's interesting that I can access kodak.com from work since our computers there are also running Norton Anti-virus and Personal Firewall, and also use DSL to access the internet via a router, and use the same ISP as I use at home.

The only difference is that I use XP Home at home and XP Pro at work.

Try turning off your router and PC and then turning them back on. This will clear the DNS cache and get you a new IP. Try again.
Run tracert multiple times. If it always goes through cerf.net and stops there then you know the problem is either your blocking connection to cerf.net or they are (blocking you). If it times out on multiple routers then it is most likely your side. Try pinging 63.240.119.110. This is Kodak.com. Try the ip in your browser. If it works then your problem is the domain name is blocked.
Do you have the built in XP firewall enabled?

When I got home today I typed the IP number for Kodak.com into IE and accessed the site. I navigated around with no problem, was able to register my camera, and download the latest EasyShare software. But then I started getting the "Can not display page" messages again and could not get back to the site even with the IP number.

I have shut down the router and computer and restarted them, that hasn't changed anything.

I'll continue on, running the trace again and see what happens.

The XP Firewall is disabled.

Thanks for all the help, it's greatly appreciated.

I've run tracert several more times and it always times out at 63.240.64.170 which comes up as cerfnet but is apparently AT&T.

Now the problem seems to be intermittent. Earlier this evening I typed in www.kodak.com and went right to the site. I was able to navigate around the site like I was earlier when I typed in the IP address. But after about a dozen links, the dreaded "Can not display page" reared it's ugly head again. And then nothing I did would allow me back on the Kodak site again.

I've tried rebooting the computer alone, resetting the router and rebooting, cleaning the Internet cache, firewall on, firewall off, everything I can think of, but it seems to be sheer dumb luck when it decides to work.

I once had trouble accessing one or two particular sites.
My ISP's telephone help service said the IP address they'd given me was very new and the sites were at fault in not being able to handle it.
They got me to use commands to free up my IP address and try to have a new one allocated to my PC, but that didn't work.

People told me it was my ISP's responsibility to solve the problem and they were correct.

I told them what people were saying and they gave me a proxy address to use and that fixed it.

I know my ISP is pretty funky. I'm a flight-simmer and I had a problem awhile ago where I could not receive email from Avsim. My ISP was blocking it because they said Avsim was on some "spammer" list. It was never resolved, I had to work with Avsim on a work-around because they could not email me a password for their forums.

You haven't been exercising your "freedom of speech" to express "radical" points of view in public forums have you?

If you go doing that you'll find yourself on some little Hitler's blacklist, and then those sites that are that way inclined will have your IP blocked. :(

Ain't the free world just wunnerfull.

I think it actually means you're free to agree.

I'm sure it wasn't originally intended to mean that, but all good things are set upon by those who would corrupt their meaning and purpose.
