A few things to check - is the 4 pin connector for the processor connected? this provides the power to the cpu.
next is to check everything else is connected correctly, including the CPU - make sure it's firmly in place, and the heatsink is ok, including the backplate for the cpu cooler.
You have something called the 'corecell' on the system disk - I'm not familiar with this, but it seems to be a diagnostics and management system for the cd. If it works from the cd, you could try running it.
When you say nothing happens, how far does it actually get? you must have got somewhere to receive the cpu error message. can you reach the bios? if so, you may find management systems in there for the cpu - set everything to failsafe and reboot if possible.
If everything looks ok, but the problem still persists, even with a barebones boot, then the chances are that the message says it all - the cpu is up the creek.

d,
i didn't know you had to plug in a 4 pin adapter for the athlon 64. i thought that was only for the p4? i will try that when i get back home. i really hope that is the problem. i would much rather sacrifice a little pride to save my chip!! what i meant was, when i hit the power button on my case, only the fan on the cpu spins. not the fan on the video card. i tried the video card in an older computer and it worked fine, along with the memory that i had installed with the athlon 64. someone at work mentioned to me that he was building an athlon 64 system and he had to plug in everything, cd rom, hdd, mouse, everything to get his to work. i didn't believe him, i was thinking that was too much stuff and the barebones stuff should boot up the pc. thanks for the advice though on the 4 pin plug. just more info: i have a radeon 9800 pro, 2-512mb of ddr 333 crucial chips, and a 160 gb wd hd in this new system. thanks again!!

The 4 pin plug was indeed originally only for the P4, I'm not sure whether all procs use it now, but as it was built into the motherboard design, I think it seemed a good idea to do so for all manufacturers.
Page 2-12 of your manual shows the 4 pin connector, and states 'This 12V power connector is used to provide power to the CPU' - there you go, you learn something new every day :)
