I have just bought an ASUS A7A266-e ATX sktA mother board and an Athlon 1600+ 266 FSB processor. I installed the cpu along with 128 MB of pc133 memory. My question is if the cpu has an fsb rating of 266Mhz but the pci bus is running at 133Mhz for the memory will my processor perform correctly?
My system hangs between 3 and 20 minutes after boot up. I suspect the motherboard but I am also getting a PSU health warning that my 5V supply is running at 5.6V, would this be enough to cause a problem?

Welcome Steve
The Bus Speed of 133Mhz will be doubled and become 266Mhz when it reaches the CPU. So you are in good shape there.
Your system hangs. Many variables on this one. RAM, drivers, IRQ's, heat issues, etc. etc. I would begin by troubleshooting the memory.
The ASUS Mboard is very picky about using quality RAM. And 256MB would probably be a better way to go. Are you using your present stick of RAM in slot #1?
As for the 5V supply.... IMHO anything between about 4.8 and 5.6 is OK. Usually the 5V side runs too low and creates problems. If you wish open up the PSU and look for a small yellow and a small red disk. Take a small phillips screwdriver and turn the center of the red disk Counterclockwise. This will decrease the amount of the voltage on the 5V leg. This is only if you wish. It's your call. I'm not here to imply that people should mess with electical components. The yellow disk is a control for the 12V leg.
Luck.

Thank you ranchdog,
I have a 128MB on order so I will try the new stick when it arrives. Yes the present memory is in slot#1. I am of the same opinion about the psu voltage, it doesn't seem to be a big enough variation to cause a problem but I don't know what the tolerence should be. Thanks for the info on the voltage adjustment, I will reduce it and see if it makes a difference.
The CPU is running at 115 deg F and is fairly steady at that so that would seem to be ok.
Thanks for the info on the FSB speed, at least that is one item out of the equation.

I am not the AMD authority here, but I would keep an eye on that temp. I beleive that is close to their recommended max temp. If your temp monitor is inacurate by 10º, you may well be experiencing a heat issue.
Check AMD's specs and see what they say http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Please click on this and the select item 12/8 for some real good skinny on the temps, etc. for the new XP chips. http://www.duxcw.com/ .
Also be aware that the new XP's have a built in heat thermistor, which none of our Mboards are equipped to handle yet. Unless something just hit the market that I haven't seen. IWill has a new "killer" board out that has hit 200 Bus Speed but I don't think it's so equipped even. So it's "ding along" with the old ZIF Socket probe. ASUS is famous for reading 10 degrees too hot. As the ASUS probe tends to read the hot air under the CPU as opposed to the chip itself.
Also, let me ask. Which BIOS version came stock with the 266-E. Would pay to browse thru ASUS websit and see what their updates look like. And what fixes are included in each. Mboard Mfg's are playing catch-up to the Max. New BIOS updates once a month.
We've had so many problems w/VIA 4in1 drivers. The AGP portion especially. VIA has a new and updated AGP driver that can be downloaded as a single unit. So I've been doing that and then going to the Mboard website for chipset drivers. And if that don't work I go to the Mboard website for everything. It's really getting crazy.
Like the old saying "It's a Jungle out there."
Post back how you're getting along.

Ok problem sorted. The new memory didn't make any difference but the reduction of the 5.6V to 5V did. I wouldn't have thought that such a small difference would have that effect but it obviusly did.
Thank for all the replies
