ok, im running windows xp with 1 gig of pc 3200 ram and an athlon 2800+ barton. I know my computer is corrupted with spywar, but the stupid spyblocs 2.0 doesn't fix my spyware problems. it tells me it finds 6 infected registry keys and that i need to restart before changes take effect, but it fails to remove them. i've tried defragging, doesn't fix anything. i run zone alarm, but do not have any virus software (because don't know of anything good that's free). I have very slow web browsing and often times i get redirected to the same "perfectnav.com" website for no reason.. does anyone know how to actually get rid of spyware without using some stupid program that doesn't really work? know where to get free and good anti-virus software? please help! thanks
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/) is a good AV software, and it is free. I have been running it for a few years without problems.
Spybot (http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html) is good for spyware/malware. Adaware is another good product. Both are free, and I use them both regularly to keep from getting infected.
Also an online virus check might be a first thing to do, then install some type of AV software. Some virii will actually prevent you from installing certain programs. Hijack This! is also a useful tool in these situations.

You will need to do some heavy lifting:
1) Go on line to Trend Micro (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) and performa an on-line virus scan.
2) Download Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html), update the definitions and fix everything it finds in red.
3) Re-boot
4) Download, install and update Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/). Perform a full system scan.
5) Re-boot.
5) Download AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/lng/us/doc/2/tpl/v5) or Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html). Update the virus defintions and perform a full system scan.
6) Downlad Hijack This (http://www.subratam.org/?page=removal) and put it in a permanent folder. Scan and save the log. Using notebook or Wordpad and copy the entire contents of the log into a new post
7) Give up on IE and use FireFox (http://www.mozilla.org/)

i did steps 1 - 5 but my computer is now slower than it was before. the spyware thing was able to delete everything but 1 and i tried rebooting several tiems. i used avast to delete some "java" viruses and a trojan. Still, my web-browsing and overall computing performance is horrible, more than before. i dont understand

What about step six? Without your HJT log, we will not be able to see what is going on.
