View Full Version : Sharing internet connection
Hi,
I have 2 computers running win xp pro. I have one internet connection only ( one ip from ISP)
The computer which is connected to the interent has 2 NICs. One NIC is connected to the internet and the other one is connected to my 2nd PC.
My PC-s are connected with CrossOver cable and the connection between them works OK, but how do i share Interent connection?.
Thanks a lot.

Internet Connection Sharing is how you might do it without buying equipment. This link from Practically Networked (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/) will get you most of the way there.
Depending on the speed of the incoming connection and how much memory you have in the PC with two NICs, most of us would use a router to share the connection as it allows each PC independence of operation (the first PC does not have to be booted to use the connection), and doesn't severely impact the utilization of the serving PCs' memory.
Hi PrntRhd,
Yes, i need to buy a router. I was thinking D-LINK DI-604. It supports NAT translation.
But i was lookig for a cheap way.

I saw a Linksys router for $49 the other day, how cheap do you need it to be?
That is really cheap. Well here in Finland the cheapest is 59 € (about $71 ) I don't want to get a cheap one. I am saving money to buy a cisco router coz i study Cisco Network Program. I am done with ccna and for the moment i am studying ccnp.
I will still try to make this connection work without routers.
Thanks anyway

Ok.
Just read the posted link info carefully, including the four warnings, and load the computer that is handling the Internet connection with all the memory you can afford, that computer has to do double-duty with ICS.
You can use the search window on that site for more help in case you get lost or confused, or post back here and we will try to help.

With 2 pcs and a simple setup like you have it shouldnt be too hard to set up.
The basics when I have done it are:
RClick on the internet connection >> properties >> advanced and then share the internet connection.
The host pc needs the ip address 192.168.0.1 and the guest one should be set to get an ip address automatically.
At it's most basic that's that.
You're not using dial-up but for those that do there is a nice utility from twiga (http://www.twiga.ltd.uk/rdu.asp) that is run on both machines and allows monitoring and control of the modem/dial-up from both pcs.
btw - nice link prntrhd
