My brother called me from New Orleans Sunday. He said he'd bought a stick of ram with packaging that said, "Compatible with Windows 95 & 98." He's got XP, and even though it counted up after he put it in his wife said she didn't notice an increase in performance. Knowing that this brings them to 384 MB and knowing what they're using their computer for (not exactly autocad) I couldn't help but laugh.

Then I read a thread here about accessing your bios and saving the changes it will automatically make after detecting new memory. Can anyone tell me if Dell machines are shipped with Award bios? That's what I'm familiar with. If not, will the keys be the same - Del to enter and F10 to save and exit? That's all he needs to do, right?

The key to hit will be F2 (this will be displayed at the upper right of the screen)

The Dells we have use the Phoenix BIOS. The memory installed is displayed at the bottom right of the first BIOS screen. Whatever memory is installed should be auto-detected by the system. Whenever the amount of memory changes from what is in the BIOS a warning should pop-up telling the user to enter the BIOS and "save" the change.

He didn't mention getting that message. But that doesn't mean it didn't happen. And if he didn't mention it, he's prolly not getting it every time he boots up. He did say the memory is counting up, so I can prolly assume he took the necessary steps.

I guess my bro doesn't need me to baby-step him through everything after all! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks, GH.
