It's not quite clear at what stage you are at or exactly how you are trying to partition or what partitions already exist and whether you are running PM from windows or from floppies. Please elaborate as much as possible including any HDD and partition sizes and what formats they are. Also what Linux distro and what happens if you try to install it without touching any partitions first.

Are you, for example, trying to resize existing partitons and keep the XP OS intact, or to repartition your drive from scratch and so on.

There are alternatives to PM such as BootIt NG or Ranish/XOSL but PM should have no problems with doing what you want it to.

YAY!@! i finally got it to partion my harddrive for a new OS!! only one problem. i can switch the harddrives, since it finished partitioning, it started up in the new partition, but if it starts that way, i have no OS. but i dont want to use that new partition right now! what can i do?

You'll have to give more specific information if you want more meaningful advice.

eg:i can switch the harddrives is the first mention of a second hard drive. For the moment you've lost me - and how did the partitioning succeed this time - from floppy or from windows, etc etc etc.

its nopt really a second harddrive, ok here is the story. at first i wanted to partition my C drive so i could run 2 OSs. so i tried and tried. so then i tried to make it the partition a bigger size and it worked. but then it ran the new partition which had no OS on it instead of my C drive. i want to run my C drive with my Windows XP Home Edition OS on it not the new partition. do u have an instant messenger? of so tell me it and it will be easier to explain,
thanks

so in other words io want to keep the new partition but not install an OS on it right now. so i want to run my C now and run the new partition later. is this possible or do i have to install the new OS first?? if so let me know.
thanks

Sorry no IM. Also its nearly 2am here so I' m heading for bed.

BTW - if you are intending to install WinXP and then some distro of Linux I don't think you needed to use PM at all. You can first create your partition for WinXP and also leave some unallocated unpartitioned space using just the Disk Management that appears when running the WinXP installation CD, without any need for other partitioning utilities at all.

Then begin the Linux installation. I have only ever installed SUSE but it created the dual boot menu and partitions it required "all on its own". Others around here who have used Linux more than me can advise you much better about how other distros sort their partitioning out.

Night night.
