This time it is different story. Dell dimension 2400, 2.62 Ghz, 256 DDR, 40GB HD, cd-rw, did not make any changes in the sys since I bought. No exordinary programs installed, just MS Office 97. I do have AVG and Norton works 2003. Any time I try to update the definations, even though I have internet connection on, it won't go thru, saying that, I need to connect manually or some thing like that. I tried with AVG's website, still can not connect to update also. Please let me know if I need to change any settings.
Thanks.

I bet the auto-update period has simply exceeded so you can't update automatically anymore. Just go on the internet site of the editor, download the virus definitions packet on your computer, then use it tio update. Otherwise, go to you reseller and buy a fresh version...

Thanks to you both. Yes, when I bought Dell I just got for 90 day trial verson. But Norton works 2003 paid for so I installed it after removing original from Dell, after installation it shows that I have one year sub till Sep 2005. So I thought I can download free updates for a year, may be I was wrong. But I don't understand with AVG, it is free software, and first time installed on this sys, giving problems. I do have AVG on other sys at home no problems to update. Surprise to see others too have same problem.

I think the general recommendation is to not run more than one antivirus software at a time since they will often conflict with each other. If possible you might try uninstalling both completely, then reinstalling only one and see if it works.

I used to run AVG and Norton's at the same time. Never had any problems. When the subscription ran out, I uninstalled Norton's or just never reloaded it on a reformat (I don't recall which).
Mohamed,
If you are having problems with both softwares, I suggest you do a full set of security scans
Spybot
AdAware
online virus and trojan scans
the more the merrier.
If they won't install or scan properly, you may have some serious spyware/malware on your system. You probably need to post a HijackThis report too for one of our specialists to analize and recomend fixes for you. The links to all these programs are down in our security forums in mjc's sticky thread near the top.

Fred, I'm thinking of switching all of our Norton protected computers to some other antivirus that doesn't take over so much of the computer. Do you recommend AVG or something else?

To be honest Dan, I haven't enough experience with any of the others to recommend a 'best'. There were some ratings someone posted in the past but I don't remember the thread or username.
