View Full Version : email security check
Here is a site that will send you emails with virus like attachments (these are safe) to test your security...the company is in the business of selling secutiry software so they are providing a means to see if you need their product or to test it...they are gfi.com (http://http://www.gfi.com/emailsecuritytest/).
I checked out my system and yes I could get the attachments to run http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif , but only having to click yes on about half a dozen confirmation boxes http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif , they wouldn't run automatically.. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif!

Thanks much, mjc. This is exactly what I was wishing for. When you have never gotten a virus..for which I am grateful..you don't really "know" if your antivirus is doing it's job. Appreciate this..again, thanks.

What fake virus, Yoda? Sob. This is embarrassing, but now I need someone to explain to me my results. On the VBS attachment, a ZA message popped up and recommended against opening it. Cool, understood that one, and progressed to CLSID one. Got a message from my puter that I had no program to run the attachment and did I want to associate a program with it, where I chickened out and said no. Which got me to third MIME one, and nothing happened. No text file on Desktop..which I guess is good, right?..but no warning message of any kind either. I didn't do the last one because not using IE 5.5. So, am I okay? Wasn't very surprised at all that my ISP didn't block any of them, but still uncertain as to whether or not I am protected?
Basically, if you don't have a program to run the CLSID any time you would get one of theose it would automatically ask the question....if you have an earlier version if some MS programs it doesn't have the exploitavble class that one need and if you went to MS and downloaded the last several security fixes same again. The first one ZA knocked out..good, if you had gone through it all the way with that one and bypassed your protections you would have ended up with a desktop file. The MIME type should also do nothing if you applied the MS patches....and the last one, don't have 5.5 no worries it is an exploit to it.
So pretty much things are working.....for now, I'm sure that soon there will be others around, and this only covers a few specific types but at least you can find out if things are working like you expcet them to.....

This morning I went and got the "tests" again, and instead of trying to "open" the CLSID one and the MIME one, I "saved" them. Then I did a scan with AVG, and in neither case did AVG find a suspicious file. Should I worry about that?

Kay...
Not to worry. Just keep the AVG updated real good. I like to use the Internet Option within AVG itself. If you go to the website for an update then you have to remember where the file was placed when it was downloaded... and drag it to the Update Folder so that the update will become active.
Have no fear if a virus comes to your inbox in OE, AVG will throw a warning on your screen and freeze that particular item until you make your selection as what to do with it.
The key to success is stopping a virus before it becomes turned loose to an O/S. Not much fun trying to correct virus damage.
Been There.

Interesting:.....
I run NO AV on my machine. It is not on a network, and I use dialup.I ran these tests and the first two did nothing apparently. The second two I had to choose to download the attachment, then open the downloaded file to get the .txt file onto the desktop. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
I'm starting to think that the extra $5.00 a month I spend on AOL now has another value. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif
Thanks MJC for the link, it is a valuable tool to show others the vunerability of their machine.

Having recently had Badtrans. I have made sure that my A/V is bang up to date (McAfee & Pc Cillon) I recieved 2 of the tests which I had to run from the pop up, which indicates that I am vulnerable.
IE6 is set at medium security at the moment, I had it set to high, but found that it stopped me from accessing some of my usual sites.
You can play about with security settings until you're satisfied that you're safe (for the moment) but then find that you're very restricted with your browsing activities.
I think at the end of the day the only way to be 'really' safe is to remove ALL leads from the Pc.
If anyone can recommend an A/V to completely protect the system without restriction, then I'll buy it !

welllllllllll............
see this (http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/vote.shtml).
seems that I got this one, but it didn't completely deliver it's payload.. may still be there though. (about to restore system anyways)
It deleted Mcafee active virus scan and f-prot (even though f-prot says that it will stop and remove this one) it didn't.
same for NAV (Norton)
and while none of the anti-virus scans online seemed to find this in my system this (http://tucows.myriad.net/preview/001-013-002-012C.html) did.
Found stopped cleaned things that no other app found.. also unlike the anti-virus apps this did not get destroyed or disable/deleted by the trojan.
also many may find this (http://www.getodd.com/stuf/stupid/hdcp/hdcp.html) an interesting site for cleaning your HDD..... (it caused my computer no problems when running it.)

did you try it??
I did.
don't know if it helped anything, but was at least harmless.
also found an email screener (http://tucows.myriad.net/preview/306.html) scanner that looks interesting.

ok
I know I may be laughed at here on this one.....
It is not psychological, power of suggestion, or blind "hope".
I HAVE noticed a MARKED IMPROVEMENT after using the thing!!!
Now, considering the source (a parody/hoax web site) I thought it was a joke or whatever.... but this thing actually did something
Please... can anyone tell me if they had heard of anything like this working (legit) ??
GH....... anyone??

I've tried it & it really has made a difference. every time I enter the room my mouse leeps onto the keyboard, springs up into the air doing a double somersault, then hitting the power switch on the tower on the way down it then lands on the mat, rolls over & jumps up & down on its tail, whilst watching the monitor boot up. After which it connects to the net & straight to the PC guide forums, at which point I have to grab it & restrain it before it solves everybodies problems. !!!!!!!!
