OLD news i know.
But im new to the whole building thing.
Questions questions go to one site P4 is better for gaming next sight AMD is.
I need a no bull**** answer whats better for gaming.

Oh ya if u can reccomend a killer gaming case that would be great to. I was looking at a Coolermaster case or Thermaltake or Antec. Just curious what would be best for gaming.

Right now im looking at this
(SAMURAI) (RED) STYLISH GAMING CASE (TOOL-LESS KITS IN 4X 5.25IN EXT. BAY + 4X 3.50IN INT. BAY + 1X 3.50IN EXT. BAY) / FRONT 2X USB 2.0 + AUDIO PORT / TRANSPARENT SIDE WINDOW / 2X 80MM FAN . SHOW CAR PRINT JOB / ELECTROMAGNETICALLY SHIELDED / THUMB SCREW FOR EASY ASSEMBLY / (L-451MM X W-200MM X H-430MM) / (NO POWER SUPPLY)
Made by Sunbeam

Thanks again
Great forum btw :D

You might enjoy MaximumPC Magazine. They are forever benchmarking and comparing CPUs, motherboards etc. They will keep you on top of changes coming up in the future.

The answer to your question changes and people have built in bias for one brand or another.

I like cases and power supplies that use 120mm fans. They move more air at less RPMs and are therefore more quiet.

My nephew and I built him a gaming machine last weekend.
He is a gamer and processes lots of video.
P4 3GHz HT 800 FSB
512MB PC3200
200 GB HD Seagate
ATI 9800 pro 128MB
DVD dual layer dual format
Antec 3700 case
Soyo MB
$850

He should be fine until BTX MBs take over and everything related comes down in price.

Well, Intel always has the highest clock speed CPU at any given time (except for those 2 days in March 2001, but that's another story) so the P4 is currently the fastest consumer CPU in existence. 3.4GHz is a lot of speed! Intel also happens to be the most expensive. $1000 or more for the LGA775 version of the P4EE at 3.4GHz!

AMD is now known for giving the best bang for the buck. The best they got right now is the Athlon64 FX-53 for Socket939, and at only $800-850, it's a steal! Not quite as powerful as Intel's top dog, but it's better for the price. 95% of the performance for 80-85% of the price. AMD is like that across the board. And when it comes to most games, AMD has been coming out on top lately. Their 12/17-stage architecture is simply more efficient.

The P4 really opens up when both SSE3 and HT are used well in a game's code, but SSE3 is fairly new, so most apps still use SSE2, which is supported by AMD's latest CPU's so the P4 has no advantage there. HT is a different story, but it can be argued that AMD makes that up with more efficiency in the core and the onboard memory controller (which cuts L2 cache latency down to 1/2 that of the P4's, despite the clock speed advantage).

This is all mostly useless for most gamers, tho, since the CPU doesn't matter nearly as much as lots of RAM and a kick-a$$ video card. As for content creation, well, that's another story... ;)
