Hi folks,

I've been having problems installing SP2 on several computers lately. I've found that trying to do the install while there is spyware on the computer, is problematic to say the least. So checking with HijackThis before trying to install has become a must.

I recently came across THIS (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f94e8b27-b656-45cd-9668-73134a18231b&DisplayLang=en) M$ removal tool for TVMedia. It seems to me that each of the problem computers had TVMedia on it. I'm always a little slow on the uptake.

So, whether it's a problem installing SP2 or if you find you have picked up TVMedia in your surfing, this tool might be just what you need.

Hope it helps... :)

Ad-Aware SE has been doing a neat job on removing TV-Media lately, as well as taking care of a number of other problems, so it may be worthwhile to just use Ad-Aware SE rather than bothering with the MS tool... Apparently SP2 has indigestion with a number of mlaware items if they are already installed...

Does anyone know if Ms knew before hand about spyware screwing up the sp2 installation?
The reason I ask is that I did not [no problems, thank goodness] and I read a lot about the installation before I did it.
Imagine all the people with auto updates on and screwed up installations because they did not do full scans ahead of time.

Adaware does do a good job, on TVMedia and many other things. I was pointing out a specific tool that M$ has deemed important in relation to SP2 installation. It's an effective tool.

There is a lot of overlapping in the many tools we use in dealing with malware. Effective tools, whether broad ranging or specific, have value. Sometimes a tool designed for a specific purpose is as useful, if not more so, than a do everything tool. Each has their place.

Hi Mark,

You posted while I was daydreaming... ;)

I don't know if M$ new about these issues before they offered the SP. There was great preasure on them to get it out.

I don't install SP2 if I can help it. It's just to new. There has to be issues with this kind of thing. Some of my customers just insist.

I do recommend a thorough HJT scan before trying the install. I've had two computers that crashed on install and I couldn't revive them. It was obviously my fault and fortunatly I had done a complete drive image before working on those units.

Whatever one thinks of M$, if they develope and recommend a certain tool in relation to SP2, it's probably a good idea to have it on CD.

I like SP2, but I am getting calls from customers that had connected TCP/IP printers/scanners that worked until they loaded SP2 and then the devices no longer worked. The current fix is going into advanced functions and allowing them to communicate again, but it is a pain to wade through more self-induced trouble calls.
The best advice is to image or backup the drives before attempting SP2 installs like Steve did.
MS seems surprised businesses aren't rushing to install this update but it takes IT resources to make it happen properly at a time where the budgets are really tight.

Please don't say I am not a man of mystery ;)

I actually meant to put it into SECURITY. Can I blame the new layout for pointing me in the wrong direction? But at least I was half right, the title did have MEDIA in it. :o
