View Full Version : Problems at Newegg?

Steve

I buy most of my parts from Newegg. I've had a pile of things that I've needed to get for the past week and Newegg just hasn't been working. So I'll get the parts elsewhere. It's been quite a while since they've been functional.

What's going on? Four or five days with no sales is big money with a company like Newegg. Anyone know what's up?

Server problems per forum at BBR, no mirrors.

Yep, the site is back up but when I try to order something, I can't put more than one thing in the shopping cart and when I go to check out I get a message that they are having problems, sorry for the inconvenience.

Oh well...

Wow! That's more than an "inconvenience". That's a loss of major revenue if they don't get their act together real soon.

Nothing more frustrating than going shopping for a whole cart full of goodies, only to find that every last cart is gone and the cashiers are all on strike. :p

Ugh...I've tried a few times tonight. At first it looked like I might get somewhere but no...I've tried three different computers just to see if maybe some local settings were causing me trouble. Each computer gets me a different result but the end product is the same. I can't order.

Bummer Steve.
As old fashion as it is, you could always try that silly Telephone (http://www.newegg.com/app/faq_contact.asp) and place an order.
They may also offer a clue as to what the heck the problem is.

I know one thing...if I had it in my mind to order something, I'd be a nutcase about now.
Never mind....almost forgot I already am one. :p

(Edit) Strange....I guess you can't even place an order via Telephone anymore? (Unless I just didn't look hard enough).
I remember when Newegg was brand new and they only had a few select items, along with a small catalog I use to get in the mail.
Back then, I ordered by Phone all the time. True...it was a long, long time ago that I used a telephone to order anything .
(Well, maybe a Pizza...you can't do that on-line here yet). :p

Well, I started to get a funny feeling so I decided to run some scans. Blackbox.class, counter.class, VerifierBug.class, Parser.class, Nocheat.A, Bytevera.A, classload.jar.

Good grief. There was a handful more in \Sun\Java\Deployment\cache. This was all on my main computer. The other three on the network were clean.

Hmmm...I wonder where I picked that crap up. Well now that I've cleaned things up, I'll give it another try. Maybe it was just me...

Yikes!
Let us know how you make out Steve.
It does seem rather strange where a Company like Newegg that does so much business, and has a very good reputation, would be down for any length of time.
You really got me going here....I better go watch a Movie or something. I'm very close to trying to place an order.
There is always something I could use there! :p

And please, watch your surfing habits in the future, OK? :D

Hey Steve,
The really weird thing is that it has not been in any of the publications about them having a problem.
Sooo......
Mark

Well, once I cleaned things up, no problem. $1400 worth of parts and software on it's way. I hope. ;)

Actually Mark, there was alot of talk on the various forums, earlier in the week, about Newegg being out of commision. I guess they got their sh*t together before I did. :o

I wonder where that crap came from? I haven't been adventurous in my surfing for quite a while. I put in an order to Newegg last week with no problem. I hope that stuff wasn't on my computer for to long.

Hmmmmm....anyone else been using that Computer? (Over here, my "kids" would come to mind right away). Well, at least on the one they have access too. ;)

Anyway, glad you got it sorted out! Although.......

You were a bit wealthier before you were able to order. :D

Steve

And I'll be a wee bit wealthier once I get the job done... :p

I don't think anyone else has been on the computer but I have been doing things differently lately. I usually shut the computer down every day, but it's been on 24/7 for about...well...7...:D I've left it on for about a week now. I'm not sure how that could cause a problem but who knows?

Steve, I am familiar with all those Byte Verify variants, they are somehow related to CWS sites per something mjc said before he disappeared.
Current Java lets the crud download but not execute, so your AV should clean it up without having to do CWShredder.

Steve

CWShredder didn't identify anything. Ad-Aware identified a few of them. AVG found nothing. Trend Micro found 14 viruses that it could not clean so I just deleted them manually.

I do click on links without a second thought when analyzing HJT logs. I guess I should be more diligent scanning for problems. I do tend to get lazy about this kind of thing.

I saw it in the forums also, I meant in any of the on line mags.
Boy that is a lot of stuff to catch in a short period of time. Where have you've been surfing ? [j/k] :)
On a serious note, what browser are you using?

Steve
10-02-2004, 09:35 AM
I'm using Firefox 0.8. I'm kind of annoyed that AVG didn't pick any of it up. Trend Micro had no problems finding them. I had to delete them manually but at least they found them.

Which Java are you using?
1.2.4_05 Sun Java J2RE is pretty current.

Steve

:p

Mark Miller

Even if not on update button i think the new version is now 1.5 which I think just went gold.
I myself have left it alone for firefox 1.0pr because it's finally running well and I screwed myself the last time :)

Yes the new Java RE version was available yesterday, waiting a few days before trying it. I hear it is stable and less bloated, just want to be sure of what problems may arise. Their naming conventions suck!

Steve: what are these, or should I start a new thread on it?

Steve

They are a few examples of what was on the machine.

Blackbox.class (http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/b/black_box.asp)

VerifierBug.class (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.byteverify.html)

NoCheat.A (http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojnocheata.html)

Steve,
I have had the new Java (1.5.0) installed since 10/04, and have no repeats of the ByteVerify class bugs since loading it. It has been stable and Firefox has been stable with it.
The NoCheat is a MS JVM bug, did you remove the original JVM when upgrading to Sun?

Steve
10-17-2004, 10:42 AM
MS Java has been gone since I switched to SUN over a year ago. I'm not sure if any of that stuff actually became active. Zone Alarm didn't notify me of anything trying to get out. The logs looked alright. That key logger does make me a little nervous though.
