Hi there,
I have recently bought a new computer AMD ATHLON XP3000 2.17GHZ, the problem is I have no sound, when I go in to Sound and Audio in the control panel the play button is greyed out? I have been into Device Manager and it is showing that a sound card is installed and working properly. I am running a genuine copy of XP Home Edition v 2.02 SP1.
Can somebody please help me.
Thanks
Darren :p

Is it under warranty? If so, I'd make them fix it!
They should have furnished you with a sound card driver disk. If you check ADD/REMOVE programs most often the sound card software is listed there if it has been installed.

Hi Whyzman,
Thanks for the reply, I agree whole heartedly, however, if it was that simple I wouldn't be asking for help now would I?
I thought I might add the specs.
I am using a ASROCK motherboard K7S8X I believe the sound is intergated in the Motherboard I have looked everywhere and I just don't know what to do. Can you help.
By the way the guy I bought it did a runner 2 days ago! :(

Hehe...well, you would be surprised during my tenure here on the PC Guide Forums how many times folks are willing to pull things apart for a look-see not realizing that their warranty could be in jeopardy. Or, that the reseller was responsible for a "working" machine! Never hurts to ask ;)
I'm not familiar with the idiom "did a runner," but I would suspect that he's not coming over for dinner any time soon! :(
Okay, if your suspicion is that the sound is onboard I would check on the disks you have for the drivers. What you can do is to either try a driver update in Device Manager, or try a Removal of the sound devices listed in DM, reboot and direct the Found New Hardware Wizard to the location of the drivers on the supplied motherboard driver disk.
If you don't have the sound drivers, you might want to try the motherboard manufacturer's website (since you know from the BIOS string) which might well have them to download.

DL the "Cmedia Audio" driver (20.2 MB) and run that after it downloads. It will be as easy as double-clicking on the file after you download it (instructions will be on-screen). See if that clears up your problem.
For good measure, also download the "Lan" and "SiS AGP PCI-to-PCI Bridge Driver", then keep all 3 in a safe place. Preferable on CD or a separate hard drive partition. That way, if your system ever gets hosed and you need to reinstall, you'll have the latest drivers already downloaded and ready to use.
Below the driver section, you'll see the downloads for the recent BIOS revisions for your mobo. If you want, download the latest one, but don't update your BIOS unless you need to! With drivers, having the latest one is recommended, but with BIOS updates, follow the old addage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Hmmm... upon further inspection, this (http://www.asrock.com/support/Download/dl_k7s8x.htm) could also be the page for your mobo. Double check that to be certain (there should be a model number silk-screened on your mobo so check that).

Once you have checked and found the correct frivers for your board I would reccomend downloading all drivers available for you and burn them to CD for future requirements.
