I have an old Pro-Gen Celeron computer we use only for word processing in our small school. It was reformatted months ago and hasnt been used since. The person who reformatted it is no longer here and we have lost the boot-up password. We dont have the schematic for this old machine and I wonder if anyone can help us find out how to erase the bios or get around the unknown password. We cant afford to get another computer and we need it for students. It works fine for the purpose if we could just get it to boot up. Keep in mind that we are not very computer literate. :(

Look at your MOBO, and somewhere (probably the lower right hand side) will be a small, flat battery. If you remove that for 20-30 minutes it should reset your BIOS and the password should be forgotten.

Just curious. Why is there a PW on a word processing computer?

LoL...the password was on there from long ago when it was used for email accounts. We just kept using it and didnt take the time to get rid of it. When it was reformatted it was uncertain what it would be used for again and so it was kept on. It has been months since then and we procrastinate badly around here sometimes ;)

This following review shows you to possibly have PC Chips M748MR

http://www.sysopt.com/userreviews/mboards/reviewhtml/PC_Chips_M748MR24.html

I got this motherboard in a Progen prepackaged computer

If you do a search for the above board on PC Chps site you might find the manual for it. PC Chips are usually quite good at keeping older stuff on thier site, oyu just have ot have patence when searching for it.

If the password is in the BIOS remove the battery from the board for a couple of minutes and then replace. This MIGHT remove the password. If it is on the hard drive you might have to FDISK (and format) the drive to get rid of it.
Fidsk instruction can be found here http://home.pacbell.net/dbk4297/fdiskformat.html

and here http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/progFDISK-c.html (this is PC Guide's instructions) with screen shots.
