I have a lg818cd 100 mhz pentium packard bell pc with windows 98. i woke up on Sunday with an error message that scan disk had run and found files to fix which i clicked to fix. after scan disk was done it said to reboot which i did and i haven't been able to get in since. using my win 98 startup disk i was able to get in and print the help screen from disk a. from that i have been able to go into safe mode and do scandisk again and fix all file errors except one that says "scandisk detected and invalid long filename entry on this drive but was unable to fix it - run scandisk for windows on c to do this." i was then able to get to the c disk, typed dir which works but i don't know what to do now to get the c drive scandisk. of course i am assuming that this is why my boot up is not working. what happens when i try to boot whether with or without the startup disk is that it goes thru the bios, thru the mouse detected, beeps once, flashes the 98 startup screen and then goes black to the a: prompt. any help at all would be appreciated.

You could try scanreg /restore (http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/start-145.shtml) from the dos prompt but it's quite a while since last Sunday and you may not be able to go back far enough in time.

When I try to start a networked computer at my office, which had previously been doing fine, it won't let me boot up windows (98 Plus OS). It says that a driver failed to load. I can get into MSDOS, but can't boot Windows. I have tried the step-by-step command, but don't know what in the hell I'm doing. Can I just reload the OS?
Desparate! (sp?)

jcossar,
Start your own thread in an appropriate forum and someone will help you. It is considered rude to jump into someone else's thread with a new problem. It would be appropriate if you could help debbi51 with her problem.

Boot into safe mode and run SFC. Let it replace any files it sees as damaged or corrupted. Then try to re-boot. If that fails, I would download the diagnostic software from the hard drive manufacturer and test the drive. If it passes, I would get (borrow) a copy of the Norton Utilities or Norton System Works. While it is bloated and not worth installing, the Norton Disk Doctor can be run from the CD and it is way way better than the scandisk built into windows.

Make and use this [b]Emergency Boot CD.
You can get either or both of the "Lite" or "Pro" versions.
Use it's copy of scandisk to fix your long filenames.
[It has it's own Operating System, and though I've never done this I assume it's like scandisk working within Windows.]

Go here http://ebcd.pcministry.com/
You should then be taken here http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=80024 if you want the Pro version, to download the zipped file holding the disk image.
You unzip the file and then use "Easy CD Creator" [or similar] to write the image file to a CD-RW [best because you can add your own utilities] or CD-R.
