Firewire HD misbehaving

I'm in trouble. :eek:

I recently installed a multi-function pcmcia card with USB 2.0 and Firewire ports from Ebuyer so I could use a USB 2.0 CDRW and firewire hard drive. No problems under Windows 98se. I then installed Windows XP and the CDRW works fine but the firewire hd only worked occasionally and doesn't register at all now.

The CDRW works fine suggesting it's not to do with the pcmcia card. What's more, I've set up a firewire network between my laptop and a desktop using the firewire port on my pcmcia card which works fine but when I try to connect my firewire hd to my desktop I have the same problem, it doesn't register.

I've looked at the Device manager tabs and there's no firewire drive to be seen nor any exclamation marks indicating any problems. I really need to access this drive and soon so if you can help, please let me know. It's a Maxtor 80gig 5400rpm DV firewire hard drive, I've installed the latest drivers from Maxtor and I'm running all this on the following machine spec:

Samsung GT7450
PIII 450MHz processer
40gig hd
256mb RAM

Try a different known working firewire cable.

If no luck, then try the firewire HD on another system.
If it does not work there, then see if reinstalling Windows 98SE helps.

If that does not work, then the HD may have died.
