View Full Version : No Boot, No Power, No Idea

I have a 500Mhz PIII which recently stopped working. Running pretty well for 2-3 years except for 2 problems:
1) sometimes it would reboot spontaneously, and
2) the clock/date settings were either behind by a day or two, or would completely restore to the default.
But everything else worked fine.
Now the computer won't power at all. No lights, nothing. I removed the motherboard, with only the power, RAM(3 S-DRAM 128MB PC100 sticks),and Graphics Card(Diamond TNT2) connected. Reset the CMOS. Jumped the power connection with a screwdriver and it worked a couple times but only sporadically. Now it won't power up at all.

Any ideas? I have the option of cannibalizing the computer I'm currently using(400mhz celeron with no documentation whatsoever) but wanted some feedback before trying anything else.

If it where just the timing/date errors I would suggest replacing the CMOS battery. But because of the other problems I would say the motherboard or the processor has had it. Look here (if you haven't already) for someother ideas to try before you toss 'em.

Hopefully someone else may have some other things you can try.

It seems to be stating the obvious, but if all "is dead", what about the Power Supply itself? Or have I missed something?

Funny dates/times = think CMOS battery - (like Ghost suggested).

Hey it sounds like your cmos battery. Why don't you just go buy a new one and plug it in there and see what happens.

Even if the cmos battery were dead as a hammer....the system would still boot unless something else is wrong...which I'm sure is the case. It sounds like a power supply gone; however, without knowing more of the symptoms which you experienced prior to it dying...a PS is only a guess.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I accidentally created 2 threads on this topic and after some feedback discovered it was the motherboard. The CMOS battery was also probably dead but that's kind of academic now. Thanks guys!
