Hello,
Can anyone describe to me how to stop that irritating dial-up tone coming from my modem everytime I connect to the internet?
Regards, FFisher
Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel, double click the Modem icon, select your modem, click Properties, under the General tab move the Volume slider to Off, and click OK.

I've tried that same thing with Winmodems before, using Win95, 98SE, and XP Pro, and every time that little slider failed to affect the volume at all.
Anyone know what went wrong? Or is there something else to this volume thing that makes it not work on Winmodems?

Try this.Right click on the volume icon on the bottom Right hand side of your desktop tray.Click on Volume Controls, then uncheck all and recheck only 3D Depth to mute , and Microphone Balance to mute. It worked for me with Win `98 SE. Info given to me a while back in this forum. Just to lazy to look ;)
Hope this helps :D

Another way would be to send an "AT" command to the modem before dialing that mutes the speaker. Rather than go in depth here it's all explained much better in this article:-

Hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone for their input. However, only the last one worked. i.e. add the M0 command in the "Extra Settings" under the "Advanced connection Settings" of the dial up connection.
Thanks

FWIW, if you want to CHANGE the modem volume (and not silence it), use L1, L2 or L3 which are, respectively, soft, medium and loud. In most cases L2 is the default.
