I have had my Creative SoundBlaster Audigy for around 3 years now, and over the last several months I have gone through 3 sets of speakers. All of a sudden, one day, they just won't put out any sound any more. Is there any way to check if the sound card is doing something to the speakers? It seems too coincidental that they all have died so closely together. The first set was 2 years old, but the second set only lasted 2 months, and the most recent set lasted only a month or so.
Yes, I am plugging them into the right jack ;) , and they are set up correctly (they are all 2-speaker sets). At this point I am looking for a way to see if the soundcard is at fault.

Thanks -

Don

What SB Audigy card are you using? (platinum etc.)

What speakers have you used?

It seems unlikely a sound card would cause multiple sets of speakers to bloiw up.

Do you know the total amp load on the circuit that your speakers are plugged into for power? I would suspect more of a electrical power problem to the speakers as the cause rather than the SB sound card.

It's just the Audigy - now it would be the Audigy 1, I guess. Either the MP3 or the Gamer version - I don't remember which, but I believe they're the same except for accessories.
I'm not sure about amp load, either - or how to find out. All I know is it is a surge protector that everything else is plugged into as well. I've changed outlets on the protector, and tried a regular wall outlet as well. No difference. The first two pair were Altec and the last pair was a dirt-cheap pair I got for $4.95 since I figured they would be history soon anyway.
I have no idea where the problem lies, or what to check. I can't get any sound even through headphones that I KNOW are fully functional.

When you say your headphones do not work are you plugging them into an outlet on the speakers or directly into the sound card? Have you tried the speakers with a portable cd/mp3 player?

What I am getting at here is the speakers supply their own power for amplification. That's why they have their own 110V input plug. The required output depends on the speakers specs which are matched with AC adapter that comes with the speakers. If you can check and see if the speakers work with another device.
