View Full Version : What loads to RAM on Startup?
When I go to Start...Programs...I see a list of 20 or so programs. Are all these loaded into RAM when the computer boots up or are they just loaded into RAM when called upon? I wasn't sure if just the programs in Start...Run...MSCONFIG...Startup that run.
Thanks.

coop: I am still trying to wrap my brain around some of this, but if you read this Whidbey article (http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Window_memory.htm), it might help you understand. There are also links off that page that explain what is safe to uncheck in msconfig to make your puter run better, particularly if you're running ME. Also, article about Resource Meter (http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/reviews/0,4161,2271378-1,00.html) and how to use it.

simply put, the programs in your start menu are not started until you click on them to start.
The programs in msconfig are the ones that actually start (without your input) when windows starts.

Sorry, coop..I didn't answer your question, and got distracted. My husband and I worked on a ME over the weekend and were appalled at all the ah..er..."junk" loading at StartUp so that was fresh in my mind when I read your question. And by the way, he pointed out when I told him about this post that he thinks this StartUp list (http://mikescomputerinfo.com/startup.htm) that mjc provided the link to is much more comprehensive.
