Can someone help me with a question from my HNC Computing course. Its to do with computer memory locations,

"Can a memory location contain nothing? Explain your answer."

I can't find the answer anywhere, and as this is only my second week on the course, is anybody able to give me an answer?

Thanks

m164294,
Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

We usually don't make a habit of doing homework for anyone taking classes but instead send them in a direction to find the answer for themselves or make them think it out for themselves.

Though I have no technical training nor any links for you, imagine this:

Binary is a communication of sequences of 1's and 0's. Correct? It is represented with a positive or negative voltage in the circuit, or a voltage or not. Still ok with that? Either way, it represents a 1 or a 0 in the binary language which has meaning to the computer trying to interpret it. Starting to see the light? ;)

Or:

A memory 'location' within a memory module is silicon mass either charged with a voltage or not. What they mean by a 'location' somewhat confuses me at the moment but my opinion would be that the atoms or molecules in any given microscopic area are there anyway but whether they contain an electron charge or not is irrelative. 'Something' is there.

I could be totally in 'left field' in my interpretation of the question, but as I said, I'm no rocket scientist either.. :p It wouldn't be the first time I've worn the 'dunce' cap...
