...and be grossed out too???
Last night, I though I had stumbled upon a great catch.
Under the Coffee Table in the family room downstairs, I discovered a jar full of Hershey's Kisses!
Yum Yum.
Well, I got myself a big glass of milk, turned on the football game and started chomping away. Man! Life is great.
Of course, while watching a game, you don't pay close attention to what you're snacking on. (As bad as the game was, I wish I did).
Anyway, after around 10 or 15 of the things, it dawned on me that they had a rather strange taste, but good none the less.
Well, on closer inspection, I noticed there was a lot of "Chocolate powder" laying around on the coffee table from opening the foil wrappers.
Guess what else was on the Coffee table??? Tiny little squirming MAGGOTS!
I should have been tipped off I suppose by the fact that some of them had unusual holes and '"tunnels" in them.
Is that disgusting or what????
They must have been sitting there since X-Mas of 1981.
Just to show you what a freak I am, I spent an hour after that doing an Internet search on the possible side effects, (or health benefits), of eating the things. Turns out they're not so bad.
I've got a call into "Fear Factor" now.....If I can sit down to a nice snack of fresh maggots, I can do anything. Yuk! :(

Eeeewwwww... yuck!
But seriously, they're just protein and fat, right?

Well, here's one little tidbit I found among others.
http://www.zetatalk.com/food/tfood12j.htm
And yes, apparently protein and fat. (And other goodies too!)
The Inuit people once considered live maggots (fat and protein) a delicacy in their diet, and as a goodwill gesture always offered their guests the first morsels.
I feel like I could run 10 miles I'm so full of energy. (Barfing the entire time of course) :p

Sort of like tiny, wriggling hot dogs.
Sure, but I still couldn't bring myself to (voluntarily) eat them.

Jab,
How did maggots get underneath your coffee table?
I have read somewhere that people consider them a delicousy
Yucch !!!!

Well, when I say "under the Coffee Table", I just meant that there is a shelf underneath for storage etc., and the candy was in a decorative jar with a loose fitting lid.
It was tucked way behind some other stuff in the corner, almost like someone hid it for themselves.....sure wish they had KEPT it for themselves! :(
I suppose a Fly or two found it before I did.
I have read somewhere that people consider them a delicacy Yes...I've read that too, but I ain't one of them!
Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go run another 10 Miles. :p

You are lucky the flies found them first! They don`t eat much :D

Hehe...I like that stefanus! Always the optimist. ;)
However, I wish they had eaten them all!
Tell you one thing. I LOVE Chocolate, but it may be a while before I bite into a Nestles Crunch Bar! :p (One of my favorites by the way).
I can't quite figure it out, but there's something about the rice in them that bothers me all of the sudden. :D

Maggots don't crunch, what have you to fear? (Oh yeah, the squishy things..)
I am aware that a survival course may involve earthworms sometimes as sustinence but me thinks the lineage or habitat of said fly or maggot should be considered prior to consumption
Don't be telling me they tasted good, I don't want to hear it!!!!
;)
Well Jaber, I hate to spoil the party, but, what you have there, unless you can see them is probably one of two things #1 moth larvae, or #2 beetle larvae.
Flies wouldn't crawl into a space like that but moths and beetles do all the time. Particularly prevalent at this time of the year are clothing and grain moths, very small moths, and infamous for crwaling into and through the tightest of spaces. Maggots, hmmmm, I don't think so. But have a look at them...maggots are pertty big compared to grain weevil larvae, moth larvae, or beetle larvae, and maggots have those prominent mouth parts up front.

Yuck! That's even worse!
I don't know much about the difference, but you're probably right.
They were very small, and most maggots I've seen (Like from Meat in the Summer Garbage), :p are bigger and fatter, just like you said.
I would love to be able to examine one more carefully, but the few left that I didn't eat have been triple bagged and thrown away. I would prefer to not go digging them up again.
Last but not least, is this a problem? More likely an isolated incident?
Or do I have to fumigate the entire house.
BTW, this isn't a 100 year old Farm House I live in, but I suppose anything is possible....I live out in the sticks.
And another thought.....do I have to do another web search, or are they also high in protein and fat just like the maggots? :D

When I was about 16 years old I lived with my family in Beirut and we bought some groceries at the embassy commissary. One thing we bought was SunMaid Rainsins. I opened a box once and started munching on them as I was reading (sound familiar??) and noticed something odd about them... When I looked they were crawling with what I had assumed were maggots (and now realize were probably some other larvae)... We live on the 6th floor and it was actually about 8 floors down from the window I was closest to... Fortunately no one was walking under that window at the time..... :D  :D
I still have trouble eating raisins.... :p

Yep, most or all insect in the larval stage are very similar in composition, whether it's the grub you use as fishbait or the tiny 1/8" long or less larvae of a gnat. The proportions may be a bit different, but the basic composition is usually very similar.
Some countries also consider insects to be delicacies, like ants and grasshoppers. I heard once about some South American country where chocolate covered ants are produced, some oriental countries consider fish eye soup (with whole, intact fish eyes) great stuff, and according to the signs on store fronts in England, jellied eels are apparently considered good eating. (Maybe some of the British members can confirm or dispute that one) I find it difficult to even hold an eel, much less eat the thing...different strokes I suppose...

Mmmmm... eel!
Smoked eel is very tasty. Never had (or heard of) jellied eel, though.

Heathen!! How can you not have even heard of jellied eel.
Personally I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. (Except maybe to shove it off a cliff) :p

Below the Congo River, Zambia ,Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi and South Africa, Mopani worms, they feed on Mopane bush leaves in season are a great delicassy, cooked on a plough disc Braai, (Barbecue) with Sunflower Oil, you can not tell the differenc by camp fire light from shelled prawns. The also taste good at a drinks and snacks party dried. Many an FT has commented on how different these dried prawns are ;) Flying ants in season are also very tasty and nourishing plus a large green Grass Hopper all cooked the same way. The Grass Hoppers produce their own cooking medium. I think that is where the saying "Lovely Grub" came from :D Jabar at least we cook our delicacys first.

They were probably the same type of bug that gets into flour and rice...only these apparently have much better taste (I didn't mean tasting :)) because they prefer chocolate...
I had a similar experience eating a PayDay... I just unwrapped the candy bar took a big bite and was walking around chewing when I noticed little critters crawling around on the end of the piece I held in my hand.... :(
Fortunately, the laundry tub was close by and I became well acquainted with the running faucet and spitting...
Not to worry though, jabar, I think the little critters you were munching on work their way up to the brain and take residence...shouldn't affect you much at all! :D

In my wildest dreams I never imagined my destiny would be a partial Lobotomy induced by moth larvae.
In the event that it gets worse than it already is, it's been nice knowing you Harry. Or was it George? Paul? Tom? Peter? Richard?
Oh yes! Just remembered....I mean Whyzman.

Actually from my few trips to mainland China, bugs and especially bug eyeballs[or something like that] were definitely consider a delicacy.
Go figure :p

Thats not worm, that is your teeth! You shouldn't have nice teeth at all. i guess they might be in and out, in and out, in and out. or maybe you lack one tooth.
I met some 80 yr old men who use false teeth to eat cakes made from wheat or somehting sticky.
Sometimes on the table, some of their teeth fall out on the dish, they look beautiful ! and their smile is also pretty then too.
