I think Wyzman was making a joke.
Try this link to search your area for a ISP:
http://www.thelist.com/
Start by area code, then be sure to see the alphabetical lists, the ones that are up top are sponsored links, FYI.
Good luck!

Well, not exactly. Some folks don't know that they can access the Internet for free at local libraries...
I have a couple of family members who use USfamily.net and are pleased...

FYI, our library hours are few out here due to state budgets.

I was looking for the same thing some time ago for some of my wife's family who were new to computers & the internet. In addition to low price, I had another requirement - no additional software required (proprietary dialers, etc.) Someone here told me about copper.net (http://www.copper.net). I hooked them up with it, and they've been happy since.

What in the world does CA allocate money to? You'd think libraries would be a priority...

ISPWEST (http://www.ispwest.com)
Excellent service at $6.95/per month if you pre-pay 2 years. I have several clients who use it and they like it alot.

Ok, the guru's are gonna jump all over me but............
1. "Fast Dial-up" is a bunch of bologna. Your dial-up connection will only go as fast as your phone lines are capable of. The whole thing is a bunch of bull. All their software does is alter your settings on your computer and most of the time you can't get it off!!!
2. Most so called "cheap" providers put spyware or adware on your system or require you to respond to so many of their mandatory ads a month in order to keep their 'low' rate.
If you really want a decent connection, the only one I have found that has no limits or bologna is Earthlink. I know, I hate to say it. I did not have to download their software, I could setup my computer as I wanted. I had no limits, and very few dropped or booted connections with them.
In short there is no 'cheap' ISP now days or 'Free', there is always a price to pay. Whether it be you or your computer.
Take care,
LG ;)

Largely agree but would say that the connection will also only go as fast as your modem can "handshake and talk to your isp". Changing to a decent modern hardware modem can be a good move if you are having connection problems or tardiness.
Intel (http://www.modem-help.com/chipsets.php?mid=120&nbd=1836) make a good cheap pci hardware-based cards that can make a big difference to data transfer speeds. E-Tech (http://www.e-tech.nu/producten/faxmodems_pci56avp_e.htm) use these Intel chipsets in their Ambient series and both the V90 and V92 versions seem to function very well. I'm sure there are other names that use the same chipsets but I have had great success with their pci modems which, incidentally, are also supported under Linux

LadyGrey:
Good to see you back; haven't seen you post in a while! :)
Copper.net requires no download, and if you reach their limit (200 hours per month), you're really on the net a lot (about 6.5 hours a day).
I definitely agree with point 1, though.

What the "fast dial up" does is cache places you go to so that the feeling is that you are going faster.
Does not do a thing as far as speed for downloads or uploads

I have to agree with LG, Earthlink is a pleasure, but it is IMHO a little too expensive. I'm going to be checking out Copper and some of the other under $20/month ISPs to see if I can save some money this winter--heating bills a re supposed to be the highest ever. Of course that'll mean giving up my Earthlink addresses which is a hassle, but if I can save enough it'll have to be worth it.
I've been using the Google.com e-mail now for a few weeks (one full gig of storage space for FREE!! Yo!!), and it is really terrific--no adverts, no corny dating services, no news weather and sports, (thanks Pentachris). I hope they come up with an ISP service that is if nothing else the same price as Earthlink, and no frills, like Earthlink. Unfortunately I cannot use the Earthlink Accelerator--it screws up my graphics every single time, and I've tried all kinds of settings and resettings, nothing works, but the good thing is they don't ram it (or anything) down your throat.
Edit: need an invite to Google.com, send me a pm with an e-mail address
:)
