Is anybody with win xp having this type of problem?????

Dell 2400 series, xp home edition,sp2, 256 ram, 2.8ghz cpu. From yesterday, when I tried to turn off my sys then this message of came up: UPDATES ARE BEING INSTALLED (1 OF 1).... then next screen: DO NOT TURN OFF OR UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER IT WILL TURN OFF AUTOMATICALLY

I left it whole night thinking that it would be done soon, it was still going on till morning, I unpluged and turn back again because I had to use it before I left for work. When tried to turn off, same message came up so left it like that, came back from work this evening, still going on same way. How long do you think it would take, any idea???? I have one more Dell same series, with auto update on, no such problem.

Something running like that makes me think it's malware. Have you looked at Ctrl/Alt/Delete? Run security scans? HJT?

Or possibly something like Java disabled when it is needed to update something?

What else is different between the 2 pc's?

No I did not check that way. By evening it turn off by itself. I found it very odd. I check the sys with Norton and AVG anti virus and also with spyboot, nothing showned up. I hope no harm done. Thanks for the reply

If you go into the Security Centre and selct Auto Updates you will find that you have a choice of what actually happens.

To avoid this happening to you again I would reccomend that you set it to notify you when updates are available but not to download or install. This way when you recieve the warning about updates you can go to Win Updates and manually download and install at a time suitable for yourself.

By doing it this way you also get to see exactly what is being installed.
