I'm a sophomore now attending a local community college and i plan on going to either a 4 year school or devry next year. I plan on majoring in Computer Information Systems.

My question to you folks is "what can i use a degree in computer information systems for?!?!?"

Thank you,

Daax

I am intimately familiar with your problem. If you are a young fellow and are able to attend college full time, I would suggest that you specialize in a field or two. A generic CIS degree may get you in the door at a large company or Government job. Most CIS degrees prep you for being a secretary. I would steer clear of Devry and get a BA or BS degree if you have a choice. You will go further in the long run with a 4 year degree than a degree from a tech school. IMHO.
Now if you want to get a generic CIS degree but also get several IT certs then you make yourself much more attractive to employers. I would also get any hands on experience you can find, school IS lab assistant, wire pulling side jobs, internships, whatever you can do to get experience. You spend the next two years getting the degree, the certs and some experience and you will get a job. Study hard and work your butt off. It's really that hard and that easy.

Listen to Variable,

Go for the 4 year degree

Get as much experience as you can.

I wouldn't necessarily put all that much weight on what an advisor tells you. I am about to graduate with a BS in computer science. The generic advisors at the school offer advice more on what courses you NEED to graduate, etc. They go by school requirment sheets, not what happens in the real world. Also they don't really get specific to each field, they are advisors to the entire university. SO they might be advising me on how to do good in IT, then a pharmacy major, then a pre-law student.

My recommendation would be to find someone who actually has experience in the field and take advice form them. They will tend to know what is needed to get a decent job.

Other than that, yes I think a BS is probably better than a degree from Devry. Also certs are important, as is experience. I was just talking with one of the better professors at my school about graduating, getting a job, etc. You now need a degree, as many certifications as you can get, plus experience in the field. There are now so many people looking for jobs in the IT field that you need to set yourself out as being more qualified than everyone else.
