View Full Version : Screensaver locks PC
I get the “This program has preformed an illegal action and will be shut down” whenever I run a screensaver for more than a hour. These are not screensavers that I downloaded or installed mind you, but the screensavers that come w/Win98se. When I give it the three finger salute, I get the “screensaver not responding”. It If I chose “blank screen” or “no screensaver” for an option, the system runs fine. Any ideas? Other than this, the system runs perfect. This problem started about 3 months after I bought this system new. (Way back about 3 years ago) No big deal, I just ran “blank screen” for a screensaver and everything is fine. Over the years I added a second HD, more ram and larger monitor. The same problem always persisted. Last winter I formatted the HD and reinstalled The OS using the restore disk that came w/mach. Same thing. Ran fsc w/no problems found. Help.?
Sys:
E-machine 333
Cyrix 333
Onboard ATI 3D
Win 98se
160mb ram
17” Envision
2g HD (wd) master
3gHd (wd) slave
Acer cdrw
Anyone try a stab at this?
The one thing I would check is to make sure that you aren't trying to use both a screen saver and power management......if you use both you are likely to have problems. Go into the power managment applet on the control panel an set things like monitor to never.
PS....11:59pm 12:17am....18 minutes.....nope being impatient isn't going to make many friends here..... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

mjc thanks for the reply. Ok ok a bit impatient… yes… just found this site and was amazed at the amount of info here. Yes, I had power management going too. Will disable it and let you know if it solves the problem. Thanks again.
Still locks. (Illegal operation) Alt+Ctrl+Delete does nothing. Must use power button.
Try reloading the screen saver files from the disk...they could be corrupted. Also check the power management settings in the BIOS....try the simple ones first like lines and set it to the minumum possible items......check your video card drivers (there may be an updates driver that helps some...)
