View Full Version : Does anyone know why my monitor keeps resizing it’s self?

Hey folks,
I keep having this weird problem with my new monitor, a Samsung SyncMaster 955DF flat screen (CRT). It keeps resizing it’s self in and out horizontally. The resizing isn’t drastic, a little less than a quarter of an inch in and out, but still very noticeable and annoying. I adjusted all the position, size, etc. parameters and the size parameters stay the same, but the screen keeps resizing it’s self in and out horizontally every time I click on the start button and then click out of it, open and close windows, etc. Would any of you possibly know why this keeps happening? As I said, the parameters don’t change, just the screen and so I have to keep adjusting it. Many thanks for any help/suggestions. Cleatus

Check two things: make sure you installed the drivers from the floppy that came with it. (they are really a color/refresh profile to let Windows know what the monitor is capable of). 2. make sure your refresh rate is not too high for your color depth (16 bit, 32 bit, etc) based on your video card.
If all else fails, use Linux... :-)

Also look at the contrast between the desktop background and the Start menu....if you have a very dark background and a very light start menu problems like you describe could happen. Also if you bought the monitor from somewhere like Circuit City...go back in and check the one on display and see if it exhibits the same problem (ask if you can change the desktop to something similar to yours...) if it doesn't and simple software adjustments don't work exercise the warranty and replace it.........

Thanks guys! Unfortunately, I don’t have the option of going in to the place where I bought the monitor and check to see if the other models do the same thing – I bought it from a store online. Interesting enough, though, I did check the contrast between the desktop and the start menu – on the desktop I have a small circular picture in the center of the screen, a little smaller than a CD and the rest of the screen is a black background. Come to think of it, that’s where I notice the resizing the most – at the desktop. When I turn the computer off and then turn it back on again later, sometimes the display is stretched from edge to edge where I put it and other times it will have resized it’s self in again when it boots up. I tried everything jsk2315 said to do as well, but to no avail – I appreciate the help, though. Could this monitor be bad? It’s driving me nuts! It just won’t stay where I put it. The other thing is that the display seems to be bowed a little, but in the center and on the right side only! For example, say you had a bunch of files viewed as a web page and in a list (or details), instead of large or small icons. When viewed in this way, the list is almost in the center of the screen, but it looks bowed! It also looks a little uneven on the right side, but not the left. I’ve adjusted the parameters until I was blue in the face. I don’t get it. Could this monitor be junk? Anyway, thanks a lot!

By the way, I just changed the picture on my desktop to a picture that's mostly white and I stretched it out across the screen - the resizing stoped! It still does it a little, but not really noticable, unles you stare at the corner and even then you may not see it. I guess that is common cause I see the ones at the college do it a little, too - I was purposely looking for theirs to do that just to see. why does that color contrast make it do that? That's very good to know and very weird. Thank you very much.

Hey Curious,
Think of it this way, you have have a paint pallet 10 feet wide with 16 million colors, you have one arm (not makin fun, just an example) and you are painting a picture that involves colors on both ends of your pallet, you have to completely repaint this picture thousands of times a second while having a conversation with your boss and a salesman. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
How does your picture look now http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
As for the "bowing" effect, adjusting the parameters on a CRT can be tricky. Do you have a way to return to the defaults on these adjustments?
Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Yeah, there's a recall function and I do it a lot to try to fix it, but it's still the same for the most part. So, you're saying that because the monitor is so big that these things are bound to happen? Thanks

Anyone you know have a monitor (known to be working) that you could borrow? Would be nice to know if it's a video card problem or truly the monitor. Perhaps you could bring the computer to a local shop and have them hook up one of theirs...they might think you'd be interested in purchasing a monitor since yours could be bad! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Actually, the only other monitor I have is a 17" DELL with the regular curvature screen. That one stays consistent no matter what colors are in contrast or whatever. I think that these problems are inherent to the design of this particular monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 955DF) because I have just read a review on it (after I already bought the damn thing no less) and in that review it said that this monitor is somewhat unstable as far as maintaining it's size and shape from window to window. I wouldn't suggest that anyone buy this particular monitor, if having the display resize like that no matter what you do bothers you as much as it does me. By the way, even though I changed the color contrast on my desktop to match better with other windows it is resizing it's self again - just not when I'm looking.

Curious Cleatus The 3rd Guess you must be one of these
....Some other people don't need a professional grade display for anything in particular, but are just deeply irked by the slight geometry, focus or colour rendering quirks that consumer monitors all have. These people won't like the DF screens, either.
from HERE (http://www.dansdata.com/955df.htm). If so, bad Luck!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif Unless there is of course a real problem that is actually solvable. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/redface.gif

CCT3,
Never did ask, "What are the settings you're running on the vid card?"

Right click the desktop and go to properties/settings/advanced/troubleshoot, then check the box that says "enable write combining". Click apply at the bottom and restart your computer afterwards. It fixed the problem for me, and i hope it works for you too.

Try this . . . it seemed to help my issue [same issue with resizing].
Right click on desktop. Click on properties. Settings. Advanced. Troubleshoot. Uncheck Enable Write Combining
and this: Click on start. Settings. Control Panel. System. Advanced. On Performance tab Click settings then check Let windows decide.
also this: On the menu tabs on front of monitor adjust brightness and contrast to 50 % each.
So far I haven't had any resizing since doing these options. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Good luck.

try going into your video card settings and make an adjustment to your aspect control........as in letting your video card control the aspect ratio and not the monitor native size...........had a problem with that and the next new drivers never fixed it and then the next set of drivers did.....go figure
