Internet troubles on XP

I have recently upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP, and I have my 56k dialup working except for a slight problem: When I am disconnected from the Internet, I cannot reconnect. It dials fine, but it doesnt go past 'Verifying username and password...'.
I am using the Standard 56k modem driver.
Any help would be appreciated.
