I am trying out Sygate 5.5 free firewall, I ran the security test from within the program, the scan said most ports were closed but not stealthed so I could be at risk, & one port was open. The problem is I can't work out how to put it in stealth mode. I wonder if I would be better off going back to the XP (SP2) firewall as it was stealthed when I tested it. Thanks for any help forum members can offer.

Sygate is better than SP2 firewall.
What port did show as non-stealthed? (You need to write it down)

with sygate, unclicking "act as server" for every application (applications>advanced) stealths all ports. this is recommended on the sygate forums

Try the above.

How do you connect? Is it broad band or dial up? If it's broad band, you shopuld get a router which will act as a hardware firewall or use a proxy server hardware firewall.
