Using win98se after a random time sometimes minutes ,somtimes hours lose mouse functionality , pointer moves off to the edge of the screen , moving the mouse causes windows and menus to open and close uncontrollably and have to reboot.
Haven't tryed new mouse as yet thought someone may have encountered this before.
System isn't new and was stable till now although hard drive failed and was replaced with no problems week before.
Reformatted drive and reinstalled windows ,Problem occurred first time running windows setup wizard , so can't be software .
Reformatting will kill all viruses , right ?

Yes reformatting will get rid of any virus present but you could've reintroduced or picked up one OR it could be your mouse is on its way out

I had a a somewhat similar problem. What mouse are you using? Are you by any chance using a MS Intellimouse Explorer? all those little side buttons and the scroll wheel - sometimes when you plug those in strange things happen and if so you can use the software to re-program the buttons and that should stabilize it. i have also found on occasion that USB mouses/mice (and by the way what IS the plural of the mouse gadget???)have some problems being recognized and/or working with Win98 SE. this would also be the case with some keyboards as well - I just fiddled with the software for a good hour or so and the problem was fixed.
