Hello all .. I'm BRAND new to this board but in a bit of a desparate situation. I run my business from my PC at home and I think I did a big 'no no' this morning!

I was using TweakNow Powerpack on my PC this morning. Went into the "Enhance Security" section and changed my login and password. I also told TweakNow to not allow 'cancel' on the Network/Windows log in when booting up. Wellllllll... I restarted my PC .. and the Network/Windows log in window comes up; asks for user/password AND Domain name. I don't remember setting a 'domain' name?? I don't have my computer networked and I'm on cable if any of that matters (which is probably doesn't but since you can see I'm a newbie .. or blonde - whichever you prefer, thought I would throw that in!) Anyway .. now I can't get into my PC at all. I get an error dialogue box about not being authenticated or something .. something to do with the log in or domain name .. I'm not at my home now to give the exact 'error' dialogue. Please can anybody help me?

How can I by-pass those TweakNow settings and get to my data AND reset TweakNow back to where I was? I can't run my business at all and have contracts to complete today! That's what I get from being a blonde .. trying to fiddle with things I have no business fiddling with.

Someone said I could use my ME startup disk and do a 'restore' but then someone else said .. after I had rebooted that wouldn't work .. I'm not even sure I can 'find' my Windows ME start up disk. I've never used it so don't know if I have that. Can a person create one in another way for Win ME if they don't have it? I have soooooo much data on my machine and am a bit alarmed thinking I'm going to lose it all because I can't get past the log in screen :( I feel kind of foolish but hope somone out there can help a poor damsel in distress.

One more question for this thread ... IF nothing works ... will I lose all my data doing a reinstall of Win ME? I do have the original ME CD.

Not sure - but you might be able to get in with SafeMode (F8 during bootup). Otherwise boot to a boot floppy and delete all .pwl files in the windows directory. Once you can get in you should change the network settings so that you logon to windows and not to home neworking nor microsoft networks - etc - etc.

Reinstalling windows should preserve your data unless you first delete things or format the partition. You can install over your current installation or just rename the windows folder to windowsold from the boot floppy before running setup. If in any doubt or if your data is ultra valuable consider backing up your partition before you do anything - but 'cracking' WinME shouldnt be that hard.

Chas Perry,

I don't remember setting a 'domain' name??
Try WORKGROUP for domain. That is the default name. Hopefully something did not change it.

Edit: Oops, did not notice this thread is a little old.
