Have you checked the font type (screen)? right click the desktop and select properties>appearance>effects and see what is selected for 'use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts' - try the different settings there to see if it has any effect.

Try changing the screen resolution. It should be set to the native resolution of the laptop's screen (1024X768?). Also check the refresh rate if you can, usually 60 Hz.

This is a very good point since most people think that the refresh rate shouldn't matter for an LCD. It can. Windows (even XP) defaults to an icky-looking 60Hz refresh rate. Why? I don't know, MS hasn't fixed that yet. But anyway, LCD displays are supposed to ignore the refresh rate since they're digital anyway, but some cheaper LCD monitors are designed to expect that 60Hz refresh rate and behave oddly when it's set to, say, 75Hz.

With a laptop display, this shouldn't crop up because it should be connected internally via an already digital signal (internal DVI basically) but since laptops are inherently quite proprietary, there's no telling what Compaq might have done!
