I have been given two cds containing Windows XP. They are burnt copies ( I assume that the originals were destroyed and that is why I was given these). Is there any way that I can identify this to Micro$oft so that I can use the program? I used to know someone who got the product key for a w2k disk, I am wondering about doing the same for WinXP.

It's not the CD that's important it's the product key. This means one of two things:

First you purchased a copy of XP and got ripped off as you should have the disks and the product key.
Second, you did not purchase a legitamte copy of XP and are looking for help getting aproduct key.

If it's number one, contact the person who sold it to you and ask for the original CD and product key or demand a refund.

If it's number two, NOBODY here will help you as this is illegal and we do not condone nor assist with software piracy.

I got the disks off of Yahoo Auctions. I don't know how to contact the person, as Yahoo has no feedback like Ebay (or anything after the auction for that matter). Maybe I have just learned the lesson of ALWAYS having a way to contact the seller.
Is there any way that I can identify these so that MS can give me a product key?

They will never give you a prodict key. I would call yahoo or contact them as this is software piracy. It is illegal and they should not be selling or allowing others to sell illegal things on their auctions.

Hopefully jes, it was advertised on Yahoo as OEM or retail product. If someone knowingly purchased pirated software I believe that they are as guilty as the person selling same...

You might want to contact Microsoft's fraud division. They might be interested in sending some "cash" to this individual's home address and following up with a personal visit. Who knows, MS might express their gratitude for the heads up by rewarding you with a legit disk...
