I have been working on a 56k modem in an old system recently. It was working as i had to change cables to enable it to work as the user had the wrong cable. Now when you click on explorer to access the internet the macine does not detect the modem. On the device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark and comment for the modem. I have tried all the trouble shooting tips but nothing. Any suggestions please???

On the device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark and comment for the modem I think prntrhd was referring to the bit in bold text above.
Which OS and is this an internal modem (PCI or CNR or ISA or ... )? ... and which cable was replaced?
The yellow exclamation mark often arises when there are conflicts or the wrong drivers installed. One fix is to boot into safe mode and remove all references to modems in device manager and then to reboot normally. You may or may not need to have the modem's drivers available at this point in time when windows runs the "found new hardware wizard".

Hmmm...I don't know of any internal modems that would have cables (although, it is an older system...). I would suspect it being some sort of serial modem...
