I have a friend who has a P3 PC with Win98 which keeps freezing all the time. Will he have to reformat & reinstall 98 or is there an alternative solution?

Let's try removing the crud first.
Try deleting all the Temporary Internet Files, and older Temporary files.
Then scan the computer with AdAwareSE, remove all it finds.
Scan the computer with an online virus scan like Trend Micro Housecalls.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I'll post again if it doesn't solve the problem.

And then(rolling the drumbeat till it gets unbearable!):

Make sure to run SCANDISK and DEFRAG(even if it's in Safe mode!). ;)

This could also be indicative of an overheating problem. Take a side panel off the case and get a little portable fan blowing in there. If the freezing stops, something in there is getting too hot.

Someone at work mentioned it could also be too many apps vying for memory (it only has 64Mb). Could this be a factor?

Yep, that's definitely a real possibility.

Cheers, folks. I'll look into it.
