Sound Problem

Hi
Can someone tell me why do I not get any sound through my monitor speakers why I take out my external speakers.I am a newbie so be gentle.
Running XP.

Let me see if I understand you correctly. Your external speakers are working fine, but when you unplug those and plug in your monitor's speakers, your monitor's speakers don't work? Is that correct?

I have speakers built into my monitor, as well as the external ones.

External speakers have an on/off button, but I'm not that familiar with monitor speakers. Could be the same thing. Have you checked for a power button? Also, are you sure the monitor's speaker cord is plugged into the computer's Line Out port? For that matter, are you sure it's the monitor's speaker cord? Your monitor could also have a built-in microphone that uses a different cord.
