Under system performance This is my error:
Drive C is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

My CD-Rom isn't working, I haven't changed anything that I'm aware of!
There isn't any (!!!) in Device Manager or any CD-Rom listed either.
I used emergency startup disc to start with CD support & I reinstalled
Win 98 SE.
I tried disconecting the CD completely rebooting but still nothing.
It originlly was on the secondary ide by itself, I tried moving it to the primary as a slave with correct jumpers, still nothing. It shows up in the BIOS.

Dell computer
Win98 SE
1 GHz cpu
256 MB Ram
30GHz H drive

Computer is usable otherwise, displays ok, connects to internet via modem.

any help welcomed,
Bob

Although there are many possible causes one of the most common is to have a noide entry in the registry at:-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\IOS

If there is such an entry then find a file on the Win98 CD in the \tools\mtsutil directory called Noide.inf

Right click on the file and select install. This will remove the NOIDE entry in the registry. Turn off the PC and reboot.

Thanks to the people who posted fixes here, but with my impatience I tried reinstalling the os again & most of the programs wouldn't work.
So I did a complete reinstall yesterday took all day, now everythings OK.
But I'll keep the fixes in mind for future.
Thanks,
Bob
