Hi all...
I am having a terrible time with my computer. I have never had any trouble until now. I recently moved my computer into another room. When I turned it on, everything sounded fine, the lights on the cdrom and cdburner were on, the harddrive was spinning, but the monitor was on and it says "no signal input". Then I hear a siren, that sounds like an ambulance. I have checked all of the cards to make sure they were secure, they're fine. I have checked the heatsink and cleaned it, it looks fine. I took the fan out and cleaned it...it was very dusty. By the way, how fast should the fan be going, mine is turning but it's not putting out alot of air. All I have hooked to the computer is the mouse, keyboard and the monitor. The siren sounds like it's coming from the front speaker. I reseated the memory stick, I still get a siren sound. I don't usually open the case unless something's wrong, so I know I haven't messed anything up. The computer was running fine, it just started this suddenly. I haven't changed the power supply cord and haven't added anything new. Some people have suggested it might be the memory gone bad or the video card has gone bad or I am using the wrong power supply cord. Others have said the cpu is overheating. If the cpu is overheating, shouldn't I smell an odor? I don't know what to try next. Thank you in advance for any advice you can give.

I would suggest opening up the case and just looking inside to see if you see anything that may be the problem. If you're not comfortable, you may want to get someone else to try a different video card in it, and see if that helps anything. Also, if your cpu overheats, I don't think you would smell an odor. lol. If you smelled an odor, then it would certainly be too late for your cpu and it would probably be fried.

Good point :) I guess it would probably be too late if it was smoking huh? I did take the case off and pretty much took everything apart. After putting everything back together, I started it and still heard the siren singing to me... The floppy disk light stays on while the siren is blasting. The hdd led light and power light stays on too. Wonder what the problem could be? The computer sit for a week before I turned it on. I'm going to try a different video card to see if that helps. Right now I have a CardEx Niva 128zx video card installed. Would it matter if the computer isn't plugged into a surge suppressor? Thank you for helping me.

First off, is this a self-build or did you buy this computer assembled, i.e., is it a Dell or something? If the latter, you might try contacting the manufacturer. If you are getting no signal to your monitor, that certainly suggests a video issue, and while I've never heard of a "siren" video failure error code, maybe they are in some systems. That's why you would need to contact the computer or mobo manufacturer. But it certainly sounds like your video card, given the message you are getting. Sometimes video cards just give up the ghost.

The lack of a surge protector should not be a problem, though you never know. In my old house, the electrical wiring was pretty crummy, and we'd get these suble power surges (went through a ton of light bulbs) and I used to have problems booting the computer. Then I obtained a really good surge protector/ups with voltage regulation and the problems vanished immediately and never returned. So, yes, not being connected can cause problems if your wiring is not good. One of the PCGuide moderators has a circuit in his home dedicated to his computer equipment. Now that's maintaining control. Good luck.

Some motherboards will emit a siren sound if the RPMs of the heatsink fan fall below a preset value. Since you mention that the CPU fan is not moving much air it could be that the fan is failing and unable to get up to speed...

Siren sounds from motherboards should be looked at as severe warnings with severe consequences...

Are you sure that you plugged the CPU fan back into the appropriate CPU fan header and not into an auxiliary fan header?

That sounds like a pretty good call, Whyzman. Need to get info from the maker of the system.

Thank you all so much. I'm going to go home and fool with it some more. Today might be a good day. Wish me luck. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again
