I'm not much of a music freak (apart from my old vinyls - LOL) and that should be clear when I tell you I haven't downloaded any music since the very early days of Napster. My neighbours asked me today where they should go to on the net to grab music, what sort of subscription services etc that exist and the like.
So if anyone has recommendations on either P2P or subscription or paid for downloads or ..... etc etc - it would be real nice if you could post some recommendations here.

Local radios web site should let you download music for a small price (this is my local radio download page - Link (http://www.hearitbuyitburnit.com/shop.jsp), places like Napster, onebigworld (http://www.onebigworld.co.uk/ukdirectory/download-music.html), also for a small price.

iTunes gets the rave reviews. Their free radio service is actually pretty good. SUbscription is probably better but I don't do online subscriptions. Napster does not give you access to any of the radio stuff for free (BADDDD). But you can buy prepaid cards at various stores (e.g., Best Buys) for as little as $10. That enables you to download songs. The going rate is .99/track, same as everybody else. So ... $10=10 tracks. Or you can download an entire album/CD for some discounted rate. The selection there is pretty good ... most styles and genres ... they have a database of something like 700,000 tracks. My guess is iTunes and such are about the same. I've been able to find and download some old 70's and 80's classic rock and jazz so, I would recommend it as a start. You can't go too wrong with the prepaid thing to check it out. That way, you don't pay for a year's worth of something you decide later you don't like.

Thanks guys that's all very helpful to give the neigbours a leg-up to get started.
BTW what's the legal position regarding P2P downloads - and does it just depend on whether the copyright has expired or not?

The best deal I've seen is the WalMart music download service. It's $0.88 per track and works only with Windows Media Player (not iPod):
