Logging database usage on a network

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to log accesses to a particular database residing on a network? I understand that logging can be accomplished through the database itself. But, if the database software is old and lacks that feature, can access be logged from the network?

what type of database is it? I know sql, progress, and oracle all have this ability.
