OK...here we go with what I'm sure is a simple solution, but one that eludes me and I'm sick of searching. (I've really got to stop staying up late and getting up early) :p

Lets just suppose that you are running AVG Anti-virus on a particular Computer.
Now, lets assume you haven't updated it for a few days.
You boot up the Computer and you receive the ol' "your Computer may be at risk" balloon warning telling you your AV is out of date.

No big deal so far right? Right!

So, you update AVG....everything is up to date!
Isn't that wonderful? :)
HOWEVER, the warning does not go away untill you re-boot the Computer.
:(

Isn't there a simple way to "refresh" the security center so it knows you've updated your AV definitions?
Does it refresh itself and I'm just not waiting long enough?

Keep in mind this is a hypothetical situation of course. :p

I realize you can easily shut down the security center, or "Change the way the security center alerts you" by unticking the box for AV.
Or changing the setting to tell Windows you will manage it yourself.

But what if I like the security center?????
And what if I WANT it to tell me AVG is out of date????
And what if all I want to do is refresh it after I've updated AVG so the warning goes away without rebooting?
Logging off or switching users doesn't reset it....only rebooting.

Why doesn't it know the AV is now up to date?

What the heck am I missing here? (Hypothetically speaking of course)

That's gotta be XP, and one of the most annoying things I've seen about the OS...the barrage of insistent pop-up "tool tips" telling you everything they could think of...you have files waiting to be written to CD...new updates are ready to be installed...new programs...you have unused icons...take a tour of XP...GRRRR....

I hated XP the first time I looked at it, still do, but since I work on computers daily for a living, I know how to deal with it pretty well, but this is one thing I've never tried to turn off, since that's the only way some people will know they need to do things like install updates...no matter how irritating it is to me...

My best guess would be to check around for a setting to turn off tool tips, maybe they actually included a setting to turn off the reminders...I haven't looked for it though. I've seen the setting to turn off tool tips, but can't remember where it's found, probably in the Folder Options applet.

As far as AVG, on every OS I've updated, (Win98, ME, 2K & XP) it always installs the update and restarts the antivirus engine automatically immediately after updating, or if manually updated, soon as you next open AVG. At that point the red text in the "Virus Definitions" button should turn to black and show the date of the new definition files, if you're still seeing the "not up to date" notification it's Windows, not AVG that's doing it. Other than turning off the notifications the only thing I can think of is maybe refreshing the desktop?? Odd that logging off and back on does not do it. I've never seen this happen, so I'm just guessing... but maybe it'll give you some ideas.

Hey Jab,
Dump the Security center, it useless.
Your geeky enough to know if your anti-virus and firewall are working

Now Mark....you know me well enough by now to know it's the principle of the thing, and not that I really give a crap about the security center itself. ;)
I have it running on only one of three Computers.
Besides that, I think it's pretty. :p

The point is, for those "less Geeky" that use it, and even may rely on it to let them know their AV needs updating, I see no reason why the Computer should have to be re-booted after the AV is up to date, just to make the warning go away.
Like I said, I don't think it's totally useless.....some people need to be hit in the head to make sure their security is up to date. I think that was it's original purpose.

I'm sure there is a simple answer.
Oh and Pete....thanks. Yes, I'm aware it's not a problem with AVG at all, but simply the way the "Security Center" handles the "status" of the AV.

As usual, this is no big deal....it's nothing more than my NEED to know the reason things are the way they are. :D

uhhh. I seem to have landed in a room full of people who know waaaaay more than I do (I'm like one of the people you all were referring to who like to be (no, I mean need to be) told that I should update my AV).

Anyway, with my Anti-Vir (yes, that's the name of my anti-virus app--Ver 6.28), the annoying tool tip goes away after I run an online update--without restarting. Just thought I'd throw that in there. :)

But you mentioned another tool-tip that I need some help with--the "You have files that need to be written to cd" message. How can I get that to refresh. I ended up using Nero to copy the files, and I'd like to get them off of the waiting list. This tool tip will not go away--comes every time I boot up.

Thanks
