Just wondering whether you have solved the problem. If not and assuming you find it difficult to live with Scandisk running everytime you boot up, you could disable it. However, this should be strictly a temporary measure until the problem has been sorted out.
Windows 98 procedure:
Click Start
Choose Run
Type msconfig in the box.
Click OK.
On the window that appears, click "Advanced"
On the next window look for Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown
Checkmark the box.
OK out of both windows.
Restart computer.

Let us know how you are getting on with this one.

Sounds like you didn't get "all" the files removed from the bad install. When you say it closes down as normal..does it totally shut down properly, or is it hanging on a black or blue screen? You might check here.. Shutdown and Restart (http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm) for a possible fix. Which program caused the problem?

The program is an embroidery digitising software program.
unfortunately I could not find a fix in startup/closedown if you you have any other suggestions I would be grateful
I also did as you said (msconfig etc) but still runs scandisk

thanks

You might need to go to microsoft's update web site and D/L windows hard drive cache package sounds like something happened to a registry key? kind of like the machine shuts down correctly but when you start it runs scanD.
Where Virtual cache is written to destination? do a search thru there web and look for scandisk problems.Just a thought? good luck, post back if you can't find a solution and I'm sure by then someone will Know what the answer is.
