new pc freezing up

I Built a Pc this week and it is freezing up before I install win xp on it. I checked the DDr slots they are shut, cpu is cool, fan is blowing, 450p, battery is good. what am i doind wrong or not doting right? any help
this is what i have plus a Mx440-8xagp card

Are you saying it's freezing during the installation process of win XP? If so, at what point of the install?

For new systems I always barebones boot the system initially. This is best done on a non-conductive surface such as a piece of cardboard on a table.

Connections from the case/power to the motherboard are accomplished outside of the case on the table.

Barebones is only the RAM, Video Card, Monitor, P/S 2 Keyboard...and of course the CPU>Heatsink>Fan...

See if you can make it through POST with this barebones approach...

Reboot, setting the BIOS to boot from floppy first...usually, the (0) choice, save and exit...shutdown.

If this worked add the floppy drive.

If the system booted again successfully, shutdown and reboot using a RAM tester such as: http://www.memtest86.com (http://www.memtest86.com/)...these are self booting.

If all is well, shut down and add the harddrive. If the reboot is successful recognizing the harddrive, I then shutdown and reboot using a floppy with the Harddrive's diagnostics (downloaded from the manufacturer's site)...these are also self booting...

If all systems are go, proceed to add an optical drive capable of loading your operating system...

The concept is to load one hardware device at a time which provides for troubleshooting as well as assembly of the computer.

Are you getting a successful post? one beep? If so are you then trying to boot from the CD? Are you getting anything or is the disk spinning in the drive? Please be as specific with your observations as you can.

Go into the bios and double check all the settings are correct and agree with your MOBO documentation. Be sure all hardware is recognized properly.

Saw Whizman's post after mine. I assumed you had a successful post. If not definately follow his advice.

yes i did get one beep it was trying the cd then to the 1.44 and froze up

Disconnect all your peripherals and follow Whyzman's proceedure.
