My PC has just shut itself down and re booted. Is this indicative of an imminent problem? No lights went off or flickered elsewhere in the flat, just the shutdown and re-boot, with of course the usual Window page indicating the shut down was not quite correctly implemented and disc scan was done.

It could be just a "hiccup!" :)

Actually, I am forever amazed that these contraptions work as well as they do. With the hundreds of thousands of files and registry entries that occur each time we boot up it is a wonder we don't have to restart numerous times to get a good load....

Agree with Whyzman.

But if it starts happening frequently, then it's very likely caused either by bad hardware, a virus, or spyware.

Did a scan as soon as I was back up and running. AVG,SpyBot,Adaware and Trojan Hunter, discovered nothing, could be it was a surge? Hope it will not happen again, slap bang in the middle of a long e-mail type letter

If it's Xp it means you had a problem and Xp shut it self down so as not to make it worse. As said above if it happens alot there could be a serious problem.
if in Xp right click on my computer and the left click on manage, from there expand computer management and the left click on event logs. there are 3 different ones so look thru applications to see what made computer reboot. Sometimes if you have an always on connection you can click on the problem [after opening it] and Ms will tell you what the error code means and if there is a solution.
This is all only with Xp.

Mark, I have Win 98SE. "Q" How did my PC shut down and re-boot with out my self doing it, could a minuscule surge cause that, all the other electric power dependent items seem to be ok. Did get a slight tingling in my right index finger on the mouse button when responding to the various prompts, seems okay now?? I lie! there is still a slight tingling sensation, or vibration, not sure. Can this happen. Not to happy with the USB on the front right of the tower, it flashed when I was installing a broad band connection a while back thro` that connection? Just a thought! Could it relate to my upgrade to AVG 7??. Not the tingleing etc.

Stefanus,
I would recommend a UPS to stop possible surges, makes the PSU, router, and all that sensitive equipment last much longer.

Have a surge suppressor, can`t tell if it works tho`. Will keep a check over the next few days and look for a possible short connexion>

A UPS will stop surges and sags, along with keeping you going if the lights go out. Not cheap but cheaper than a PSU replacement and the loss of data/drives.

Sorry, wasn`t thinking, yes I should get one, had it on the farm because of power probs. Thanx for reminding me :o Did not realise that this was a requisite in the Western World.
