I have a co-worker- who has cancelled her AOL account to sign up for people pc, it says resolution needs to be set at 800X600, went to display properties settings and move to the 800X600 setting and restarted, nothing happened, looked at device manager, there is a Rage AGP Pro turbo, video card and a genieric driver for display, and the computer is a cheap e-machine with a Celeron processor, Do I need to update driver for the video card or is there some other problem I need to look at, thanks for any help you can give me on this

I'm not sure what you mean by "generic drivers" (?installed by windows?). If the drivers, even old ones, are installed for the card you should be able to get 800x600 resolution. If you go into device manager does it say that the card is installed and working properly?

What was the resolution set on before you tried to reset it? And what operating system is she using. Windows ME and probably XP contain the drivers for that card. For Win 98 you can use the following driver:

If you install the driver and still cannot set the resolution, then the video card is probably broken.

Display was set 1024X 768 I think, window 98 was OS and if the video card is on the motherboard and broke then I would need to set up PCI video card and overide the onboard one right?

I'm guessing that the display stayed on the previous higher resolution?? When you moved the slider to loser the resolution to 800X600 did you click on APPLY first?? I think you need to do so rather than just the OK button to make it happen...

Have you tried PeoplePC on 1024X768. It should run fine. Probably Whyzman is right - you just didn't conclude the change properly by applying it.

Thanks, but I am not a complete moron. there is a pop-up box that says resolution needs to be set on 800X600, I have applied these settings several times and restarted still nothing has happened, I am in the process of trying to tranfer a already download driver to the box to see if I can get it to work, I will reply back when I get something different

Tried several things, finally reformatted and reinstlled window 98, now able to set display, now I am getting a message that not able to dial out with modem, All this co worker did was to delete AOL and install People PC, why would her modem all of a sudden not work?, every thing is plug in right ?, device manager says unknown PCI device, which I am guessing that I will need to install driver for modem ?, any other suggestions for this, thanks

Since you reformatted and reinstalled the operating system continuing problems from removing AOL software are moot...
I'm wondering if what may have started the downward spiral resulting in reformatting might have been she deleted the AOL folder rather than actually "uninstalling" the AOL software...
I would say that you are correct in your diagnoses that the problem you're currently encountering is the result of the modem's need of a driver...

You may be able to find the correct driver online if you can look at the actual modem card. It should have something on it to identify, if only a code on the chip. The other, much easier, option is to just replace the darn thing. "Winmodems" are cheap, and I'm guessing this person isn't going to care about raw CPU performance if she's just getting People PC. Run to the local computer shop or big chain store and pick up a modem. Getting this thing to work right now is, I think, worth the cost.
