Just installed this board and can not get sound to work. Installed drivers but there is no audio device listed in device manager. There is however a pci modem listed and there is no modem installed. On board sound is turned on in bios. Any help would be appreciated.

Go to control panel, sounds speech and audio. Then choose sounds and audio devices. Make sure the sound is up and the mute box is not checked. Now click on the audio button and verify 'Realtek AC (or something like that) is default device for playback, recording and midi. Also the use only default devices box is checked. Next click on the hardware tab and see if the realtek AC97 is listed there. (I suspect it is not) If not go into device manager and uninstall the audio drivers that are there and also uninstall the modem. Now install the audio device and drivers from the motherboard drivers CD and reboot the system. Let us know what happens.

Still doesn't work.
Can not uninstall the pci modem because there is not one to uninstall. Tried several times to remove it from device manager but it shows up again after pc restarts.
I have installed and uninstalled the realtek drivers several times using both the one from the install disk and the latest one downloaded from the net. I have even done a clean install of windows twice. No audio device has ever been detected.
Is it possible that the pci modem that is detected in device manager is actually an audio modem riser that the onboard sound is built on?
I am just as lost as ever...

If Windows keeps finding a modem instead of an audio device, I would suggest doing a thorough search of all BIOS options. The problem has to be there. Go into every menu and submenu and look for anything that even remotely refers to audio, modem, or PCI device. You could also try clearing the CMOS, but I suspect you've already tried that (in which case something is turned on by default that shouldn't be).

Would also like to add for you to check that onboard audio is "enabled" in bios.
You will also need to re-install your OS assuming you are using Windows XP. Most of your other programs will also have to be re-installed.

NO!
Reinstalling Windows is a last resort ONLY. I can't think of any reason to reinstall untill every other option has been attempted.

I suggest you got to Gigabyte's web site and download the latest audio driver for your soundcard and check to see if there are any patches.
