View Full Version : New motherboard problem

I recently purchased a refurbished Asus TUSL2-C motherboard to build a new computer, and I am fairly new at this. I am also using an Intel 1A GHz Celeron processor. This board is supposed to be compatible with the Celeron processors with FC-PGA, which this is. There is no graphics hardware on this motherboard.

I assembled this system and, on startup, everything seemed to be going OK and the drives were accessed, etc. The problem is, NOTHING shows up on the monitor. The monitor is not taken out of standby. In order to troubleshoot, I replaced my new graphics card with the working card from my old computer (both in AGP slot), but to no avail. Next, I replaced my system memory with the working memory from my old system, but again to no avail. I am wondering if the problem could be a faulty motherboard. Specifically the AGP slot. No I don't have any non-AGP video cards.

I purchased this motherboard refurbished from NewEgg. Out of curiosity, I went on the site to obtain an RMA# (haven't done it yet) The two choices given are 1) refund or 2) replacement because it is faulty. Is it possible that the person who returned this just got a refund, and it was put back on the shelf for me to experience the same problem?

Thanks for any help.

Hi and Welcome,

I would return it. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that you shouldn't get video at least in DOS mode so you can go into BIOS setup.

Don't mess around with it. What you say could very well be true. I don't trust half of those online vendors when they say something has been "refurbished". I wonder how many of them just think that maybe the next guy that gets the unit will be able to get it to work, so they don't even bother checking it out. Hmmm, food for thought.

You might try www.computergeeks.com (http://www.computergeeks.com) They have refurbished items, too, but I would trust them to actually test it before they send it out.

Good luck.

In follow up, I left the computer on for approx 2 - 2.5 hours and came back. I only had the power supply, memory and video card connected to the motherboard. The power supply was warm to the touch. The video card was very mildly warm. The CPU heat sink did not feel at all warm. Should the heat sink feel warm? If so, I'll take this as a sign the CPU is not working. The question is then, why? This is a brand new CPU. Could the situation look similar to what I'm experiencing if the power supply is not strong enough? I am using a 250W Sparkle power supply. Should this be enough to run a 1GHz Celeron Processor?

Thanks again for any help.

I agree with BigBlue, return it. One question, are there any beeps at startup. I assume not since it's doing something, but just asking.

If you are certain you have the cpu jumpered correctly with respect to clock settings AND you made sure to set the BIOS jumper to run [rather than reset] and still get no vid...it's probably the mainboard.

Should the heatsink feel warm? Absolutely! In fact, it should be a little on the hot side. That signifies that not only is the CPU working, but the HSF was installed correctly so as to transfer heat away from the CPU.

With just the barebones stuff you have in there, a 250watt power supply should at least grunt a little.

Randy_Tx had a good point as usual. Make sure the Clear CMOS jumper is in the Normal position, not the Clear position. Also, make sure there is nothing between the battery and motherboard. Maybe somebody placed a piece of cardboard or plastic in there so as to conserve on battery life.

Good luck.
