I can't decide if I am going to keep this, but the premise is very cool. Looks like what they are talking about with Longhorn. I know it's been around awhile but it's much better than it used to be
The only thing I think you need is a large monitor because even at it's smallest it will take up about 1 inch of space. You can of course toggle it on and off. From what I can tell it uses the same amount of memory as a web browser when you first start. Lots of panels that you can use or not.
Anyway I have not finished playing with it yet.
Here is the homepage link if you just want to read and see what it's about.
Just as a disclaimer I have nothing to do with this product and am only passing on something that looked cool to me.
It ain't SPAM http://www.desktopsidebar.com/index.html

By the way it's got a built in rss feed to things like fox news, cnn etc....

Anyone remember "PointCast"? It did something similar years ago. The side-effect was it ate massive bandwidth. Might not be a problem now ....
I'm curious about this ... but wary.

Hiya Mark.
I happen to remember you mentioning another sidebar about a year ago. Did a search and here is that thread:
http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=27169&highlight=Sidebar
I went to PCWorld to find that sidebar to compare the two. Unfortunately, it is no longer listed. Anyway, I do remember that I did try the first sidebar you suggested and personally, I found it was kinda bloatware myself. I also remembered I had a little trouble un-installing/removing the program from my computer.
I can not comment on this particular desktop sidebar as I haven't tried it and will forgo the option to do so. I seem to remember that it has about the same options as the first sidebar mentioned.
But it is at least freeware and someone else might like it. :)

Hey John,
I think it was the same one with more options. What I found this time was that I was getting pop-ups that I wasn't before. I read the eula and that was not supposed to happen. Anyway it was a little bloated and I wound up geting rid of it.
Just a sign of crs and having too much time on my hands.

I clicked on the link and looked over the first page.
I'm not a gamer but I also don't like my bandwidth being wasted on anything I may not view per session. By the looks of these features I don't think motherboards and memory technology has come far enough to load all the features without noticable slowdown. And you know the crowd of newcomers will try to multitask their pc's with SideBar loaded and want to play the ultra-demanding games simultaneously. Oh, and whine about the stutters in sound and blinks in monitors and ask 'why me'
It looks like a cool prog but for the features, it must use lot's of memory?

It uses as much mem as when you open a browser but the more panels you add the more mem is used.
In truth even if it used 50-60 mgs of mem, that's not a lot on a pretty modern box.
as I said you can turn it on and off from the notification part of the task bar.
I got rid of it because I thought I was getting pop-ups that I never got before. They were not getting thru the pop-up blocker but I was even getting notification of one on this site when I got to our home page. [Pc Guide]
As Jab pointed out to me it was time to let it go
