View Full Version : AOL High Speed Cable Warning
WARNING: I just got an AOL High Speed Cable account hoping to make the best of a bad situation(going to college, live with parents who refuse to leave AOL). It doesn's work at all. I am only infrequently able to connect via the cable modem, and their tech support hotline team varies greatly in knowledge as far as I can tell. After fiddeling for awhile and only getting connections at infrequent random moments I thought the probable cause was Time Warner(local cable network provider) was issuing IP addresses that were not recognized by the AOL server. Called tech support in an attempt to rectify this by getting myself assgined a static IP and DHCP that would work on the AOL server, and it was a no go. On person who anwered my call simply said delete cookies and restart computer, which had no effect whatsover. When I outrightly stated that I percieved the problem was a conflict with the IP addresses he very reluctantly admitted I was correct. He then had no choice but to basically tell me that all I could do was wait until AOL/Time Warner resolved the conflict. I did speak with several technicians as initially AOL transfered me to Time Warner. The cable co. asked if I saw lights on the modem: yes I do. Okay, it is not our problem they said. Transfer me back to AOL, who seht me back to Time Warner. Eventually I got pissed enough that I firmly told the cable guy: hey I can't ping the AOL server, I can only ping my own IP, so it is your problem fix it. Hung up on me.
I hope this will prevent someone from wasting their time and money until AOL and the cable companies get things straightned out.

Welcome to the world of broadband. If you're patient enough and keep at it it'll work out

Why Pay for Both TW/RR and AOL
Drop the AOL stuff ( Do you realy need them holding your hand)
Check it. Always online . allways connected and No AOL hassles.
IF you realy need to keep the aol mail box as I recall they (RR) will give it to you for $ extra

I believe they might have fixed the problem. Called tech support again today and they told me that the problem was with XP Remote Connection Auto Connect service, and stopping it would allow me to connect. I stopped the service, reinstalled AOL, and was able to get online. I will no accept this as fixed until I am able to get on regularly as I was able to get on once in awhile before, just had to try 100 time to connect once. I feel that this should all have been worked out before public release of the service, but if it does work then I am happy, and have no problem with AOL as long as the service works as it should 90% of the time. I will update this after a few days if my service has been fixed properly, I don't believe in condemming AOL for having bad high speed cable if it does work properly.
P.S. I can't get rid of AOL, I am going to college, majoring in computer science, and live with my parents. My mom loves AOL, and refuses to leave it, makes no difference to her that I am paying for the service, she uses AOL to send mail on an old computer using dialup. It makes no differnce to her that I offered to pay for a differnt ISP(I already paying for AOL anyway), and network the two comps so that she can also have a high speed connection. She didn't care, and told me I can't change ISP's. Guess I am stuck with AOL until I move out.

that sucks ass.
When i was considering broadband, i thought of AOL plus. Good thing i didn't go for it.
I went with PacBell DSL and had a few conflicts. I wasn't getting signal to my house. It wasn't their fault. My house is old and who ever did the phone wiring jacked it up. PacBell came and fixed it. Im digging it!
