I have a self built computer with an Asus P4C800-E motherboard and a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz cpu. When pressing the on switch nothing happens. The fans spin for a second, then shut down. I replaced the psu and checked memory and video card. I noticed if I pull the P4 connector from the motherboard the psu runs and the fans spin. Does this sound like a bad motherboard or cpu or both. Is there a way to tell. Thank you for any help.

Do you have your CPU fan connected to your motherboard?

Yes it is connected to the motherboard. One thing I noticed a few days before the computer quit was that when booting the images on the screen would flicker and jump around until the windows xp screen would appear. I do not know if this relates to the current problem or not.
Since things spin up when the P4 connector is disconnected, then the CPU may be bad.

Did you try taking out the video card, pci cards, ect?
Regardless of the computer not booting you had some type of issue with video.
I had the same problem here are some post's from another forum.
"your video card probably had a bit of its ram fry.
which is now currupting the image that gets displayed to the screen in low video modes. When windows takes over it uses a different bit of ram that isn't all fukkard.
but anyway, thats my best guess.."
(different mobo but may pose an awnser)
"ok...I had the same prob with my ga-k8n pro and a 5900fx. The prob is the card has issues with 8 (16 too) bit color mode. I had to RMA my video card. BFG couldnt help me and neither could gigabyte. BUT....the purple sounds almost like a bad VGA cable. Swap that out. Other than that, Id try a different video card, that would narrow it down to either the monitor, video card, or mobo. Also, its a long stretch, but update your BIOS, super simple with @bios. "
